Chapter 11

Dust spiraled along the trail in front of her, every step kicking up more into her eyes. Carly was sure she’d swallowed more dirt in the past hour than the entire time she’d been on the trail. The sun had beat down on the travelers since early morning, with no respite from the heat. When the wind had started to pick up, she’d hoped it would offer some relief, but instead it only seemed to blow the dust around to stick to her skin.

Yesterday had been a nice day of relaxing with the other travelers, resting up for the second leg of the journey west. She’d spent her time visiting with Jenna and Minnie as they prepared food for the days ahead, while Adam and Hunter had done some repairs on the wagons.

After the night she’d spent dancing with Hunter, Carly was feeling much like those women she’d seen in the cheesy Hallmark movies over the years, completely head over heels for the guy who’d swept them off their feet.

“Carly, how come Gordon is acting so funny? He doesn’t want to run, and he seems scared.”

Carly looked down at Mary who was walking alongside her. Gordon was keeping himself tucked in tight between them, not wanting either of them to get too far away from him. “I’m not sure, Mary. I’ve never seen him act like this.”

A low rumbling sounded in the distance, and Gordon’s fur stood on end as he started panting loudly. “Is he going to be okay?”

“I think there might be a storm coming. He’s probably just scared of the thunder.”

They’d had a couple of mild thunderstorms since they’d arrived, and Gordon hadn’t seem too bothered, but Carly could sense there was maybe more to this storm which had the dog panicked. Her stomach knotted in worry at what could possibly be coming their way. Out here, they didn’t have protection from the weather, so she knew how dangerous a storm could be.

Luke rode up to Hunter and spoke to him, then went to Adam’s wagon. It was obvious he was in a hurry and as soon as he was gone, the men were pulling the wagons to a stop.

“There’s something coming, so we need to get ready. We’re going to pull the wagons into a circle and get the livestock into the middle. Ladies, get yourselves into the safety of your wagons as soon as we’ve stopped moving.”

Luke rode over to where the women were walking, passing on the message before heading back to let the others know. Already, a sense of urgency was in the air as wagons creaked to a stop and people started shouting orders out to secure everything in the camp.

The wind was picking up around them, and as Carly took Mary’s hand to race over to the wagons, another loud crack of thunder echoed across the sky.

“Mary, get into the wagon. I’m just going to unhitch the oxen and get everything secure.” Hunter came over to speak to them, holding onto Mary’s shoulders as he tried to keep her calm.
