Wednesday night had arrived. She turned around in front of the mirror again. Yes, it was a good choice. She looked beautiful! She had even found some tiny sparkly purple clips at the drug store to put in her hair. It was mostly down, long and wavy, she had curled it. Now she picked a few artful strands to pull back from her face. This was fun; she hadn’t dressed up for anything in a long time. She wore little gold hoop earrings, and after some contemplation selected the small gold cross from her grandma to wear on the chain around her neck. It was a little plain, but she’d been rather partial to crosses these days; it couldn’t hurt. She sat down on the spare bed amongst the practically untouched pile of books, to put on her shoes. They were a black pair of wedge sandals that had straps criss-crossing up around her ankle.

She had looked at one of the books earlier today. The pictures were of farmers herding sheep and pilgrim women wearing white aprons and bonnets while baking bread in big stone ovens. Interesting, but nothing too exciting. She certainly had a hard time picturing Cain among them. She hadn’t done more than flip through the ‘Salem Witch Trials’ book either, reading a paragraph here and there. Nineteen people had been put to death as witches after what seemed like ludicrous trials, all because some girls said they saw spirits. She couldn’t imagine Cain being involved. The date must have been a coincidence.

She finished lacing up her sandals and went to the mirror to check her makeup. She had just finished putting on some lip-gloss when there was a knock at the door. “Come in.”

Karen opened the door as Felicity grabbed her jacket and purse. “Are we too early?”

“No, I’m ready,” she said, crossing to the door. She was happy to notice that Karen wore a blue shiny satin shirt with her jeans. She hadn’t worn much make-up or done anything with her shoulder length light brown hair, but at least her clothes looked dressed up to just about the same level as Felicity. One less thing to worry over.

Behind Karen stood her first evidence that she looked as good as she’d hoped. Karen’s fiancé, Jack, looked as if he’d meant to say something, but forgot to speak after opening his mouth. He recovered quickly, before Karen noticed, to Felicity’s great relief. She briefly wondered if she should change after all.

“Felicity, this is my Jack,” Karen announced proudly. She clearly sounded as though she were marking her territory. Fine by me, Felicity thought. I don’t need someone else’s guy, I’ll find my own.

Still, it was nice to know her charms were evident. “Thanks for driving me,” she said, donning her jacket.

“No problem,” Jack responded with a smile. He looked as though he might have been older than them, but was still quite a way off from ‘responsible adult’ status. He wore faded jeans and a black button down shirt that was open to reveal a ‘Guns N Roses’ tee underneath.
