The Horror
Hudson's body ached as he lay face down in a pit of mud. Rolling onto his back, he stared up at the hole he had fallen through and saw the other mercs hanging over the side.
âI'm alright." he managed to splutter.
He dragged himself away from the muddy pit, then wiped clumps of brown sludge from his face. It smelled foul enough to make him gag but he ignored the stench and surveyed his surroundings. He was in a tunnel thick with an ominous green mist. There were pools of emerald coloured water everywhere.
âGet down here.â Hudson called up.
âRight away, captain.â Came the reply.
Hudson turned around in the direction of the elevator and sighed. It was completely blocked off by rubble that had fallen away from the floor above. Maybe, if the others had not used all their explosives they could blast through, but it was impossible now.
âElevatorâs a no-go.â Hudson replied, wiping more mud from his forehead. âItâs completely blocked.â
âWe could climb down.â Orson Raggett suggested.
âNegative. We donât know which parts of the structure are safe.â
âSo, what do you suggest, captain?â
Hudson could not concentrate to think of a plan. The idea of being buried alive underneath Fort Nebula did not appeal but it was a possibility without an exit point. He was panicking now, imagining the roof collapsing, trapping him forever in a muddy and misty nightmare.
"Captain?â Squeak repeated, obviously hoping for some direction.
âIâm thinking.â Hudson fired back.
They needed rope but none of the mercs carried it with them.
âGo back through the rooms and find some rope.â
âBut captain, we didnât see any rope.â
âThatâs because we werenât looking for it. Now go and check!â
âRâ¦. Right away.â
âAnd keep your eyes peeled. This place isâ¦.â
A high-pitched scream. It was impossible to tell who it came from, but it chilled Hudson to the bone. Gunfire exploded from above. A shadow passed over the hole he had fallen through. Then more piercing screams with short bursts of gunfire in-between.
âGuys, talk to me.â Hudson cried, releasing a pistol from the holster on his right hip.
No response.
He pulled out a mud-caked, communicator from his jacket pocket and frantically tried to contact Bry Tanner. There was no answer. Worried for the safety of the other squad members, he completely ignored his own advice from earlier and leaped onto the nearest girder, desperately trying to pull himself up through the hole. It was unsecured, so it broke away, leaving him sprawled out in the mud once again.
With no time to compose himself, he battled through the mud to look for another way up. Every step was laboured, sapping his energy like a three-day marathon, but he soldiered on, desperately hoping to strike lucky.
There's got to be another way up.
He swung around a corner that led him to a group of unmarked barrels sat in the centre of a fork in the tunnel. There was no mud in either direction, but the barrels caught his attention immediately. All were open and filled with the same green substance that coated the base.
