CHAPTER 11

"I can't believe you came," I whispered to Min as we hiked up the trail with Anxious so close to her she risked tripping over the excited guy.

"Neither can I. It's great to see you, Anxious," she said rather loudly, then bent and patted him before straightening and continuing up the hill.

"Why did you come?"

"Honestly, I don't know. I guess after you being so different this last year without the stress of work, I wanted to see for myself how you were handling things away from everything."

"On day two? I saw you yesterday."

"Are you teasing me?"

"Maybe a little. I'm so pleased you're here, Min. I didn't expect this. Everything okay at home?"

"Yes, fine. Okay, I admit it, I'm jealous and wanted to find you at your worst so I could see what it would be like to go it alone. As I said, I'm jealous."

"Of what?" I asked, confused. "Not me giving everything up?"

"Of you. You finally did it. Something you've been talking about for ages. You sorted everything out and did it. Remember when this was our dream? To do it together? We used to have weekends away if we both had a lull at work, but there was always the stress and worry hanging over us. Now you don't have that. You're finally free. You did it and I'm jealous."

"You could have done it if you wanted to."

"I know, but I'm a coward. I can't seem to face packing in my job once and for all and enjoying things for a while. Maybe I'm scared of my life being too quiet. Too much time to think. I know I shouldn't complain, as who else my age has the luxury of even choosing between working or not, but there you have it. I have the choice but I can't quit, and I'm jealous that you've done something so brave."

"You'll figure it out. One thing I learned from the crap we went through is that life is too short. Even if you mess up for years and years, it's never too late. Better to try and fail, than never to try, right?"

"Right. Maybe I will quit. Become a homeless vagabond like you and spend my life in awful cut-off jeans and sad Crocs."

"There is nothing wrong with Crocs!" I exclaimed, raising my hands. "You should get a pair. They're beyond comfortable. And I thought the shorts looked good. My knees aren't that knobbly, are they?"

"No, your knees are fine. I'm just messing with you, Max. Now, what's really been going on here?"

"How'd you mean?"

"I mean, there's more than you told your folks. I know that much. What am I missing out on?"

"Nothing much. The only thing I didn't mention was this weird guy further down the field who turned up yesterday without even a tent. I think he's watching me. He's odd."

"Why would he be watching you? Do you think he's the killer?"

"I doubt it, and I'm not even sure if he is spying on me. Maybe he's just a pervert.
