“Cashing In”

“Ty, you get my girl home okay,” said Dad, hugging me goodbye.

“You know I will.” Ty answered in a tone more formal than necessary, like he was babysitting me or something.

“I’m sixteen now, you know. I could learn to drive myself.” I hadn’t mentioned it since Grammie’s the day when Dad and I went. Couldn’t hurt, so I gave it another futile shot. Ty and Dad looked at each other and rolled their eyes. “When you’re willing to sit down and let me teach you to read a map so you’re not driving around lost in your own hometown, maybe we’ll talk about it, okay? Just let your old dad get used to one thing at a time.”

I nodded in defeat. He was right. I had absolutely no sense of direction. It was pathetic. The only thing they could tease me about that was true, although I would never admit it to any of them.

“Wanna get some ice cream?” Ty asked as I slammed my heavy door shut. I was so embarrassed I didn’t know what to say. I was beet red, which confused him. It wasn’t exactly a normal response to that question, so of course I made a joke.

“Unlike you who gets paid for the slaving we do at Cameron Manor, the only thing I have in my purse is makeup and a cell phone.”

He laughed as he swung the truck around to face the road. I didn’t realize how the sound of his laughter made me feel before now, happy and excited.

“Don’t worry, I got you,” he said, amused by my poverty. I sighed, wishing I could say the same about him.

“Brewster’s okay?” he asked, knowing it was my favorite. I nodded, trying not to think of all the kids that would be hanging out there since it was summer. It was just a few minutes to Rogers Road and when we pulled up I could see the parking lot was nearly full.

“We can go somewhere else if you want,” I suggested.

“Nah, I don’t mind waiting. I want to get a hotdog too and they’re the best here.”

I flipped down the mirror and fixed my bangs under my hat before we got out. I was expecting him to be halfway to the door by the time I was done, but he waited and didn’t say a word. I realized that I hadn’t given him enough credit, of course he’d sit and wait. Just because we weren’t a couple didn’t mean he wasn’t still a gentleman. Of course I knew he’d wait for me and it made me wish he were mine all the more. I was starting to get bummed again and right now there wasn’t one single thing that would distract me from the pain of loving him. I sighed deeply.

“You okay?” he asked, picking up on my mood as he always did.

“Fine,” I lied. “I’m ready. We should go before it gets any more crowded in there.”

There were only a couple of tables to choose from so I just followed him to the one by the window.
