Chapter Thirteen

Robert welcomed the blast of cooler air that hit him in the face when he and Callie stepped onto the sidewalk. He’d expected to be dining alone when he decided to try the best restaurant in town but was thrilled when he ran into Callie in the foyer. He’d taken a chance when he asked her to join him and had held his breath until she accepted—he hadn’t realized how much he wanted her to say yes until he was faced with the possibility that she wouldn’t.

What she didn’t know was that he had considered calling her and asking her out tonight anyway. He should have, especially after last weekend at the festival. But she’d accepted his impromptu invitation, so the end result was the same.

They talked and laughed through dinner, and it was one of the more enjoyable meals he’d ever had with a woman.

But then, innocently enough, he’d reached over to clean a spot of marinara off her lip. He knew she wouldn’t want to walk through the restaurant with sauce on her face. But when his finger touched her lips, an intimate tingle traveled through him and nailed him in the gut. And if he wasn’t mistaken, Callie felt it, too.

When he’d first accepted the position in Sanders Corner, he’d been concerned that he wouldn’t be able to think when it was so quiet, but that was far from the case. He’d painted himself a picture of small-town living that was far from the reality. Or maybe it was just him changing, adapting to living in Sanders Corner after so many years in the city.

After he’d talked to his parents and better understood how they felt, he’d begun unpacking the baggage that he had been carting around about small towns and realized he was happier than he ever thought he would be.

Part of that had to be attributed to the beautiful woman walking beside him.

As they strolled the sidewalks of Main Street, a couple approached from the other direction.

“Good evening, Mr. Collins, Mrs. Collins.” Callie’s smile was genuine as she greeted the couple, but she kept her fingers firmly intertwined with his. He took that as a good sign—that she wasn’t trying to hide her feelings from the town.

“Hello to you, too, Dr. Parker. And Dr. Jameson. It’s so nice to see you two out tonight,” Mrs. Collins said.

Robert couldn’t mistake the omitted “together” at the end of her sentence. He didn’t need
