It’s chilly out this morning, but after I have the worms situated for the day, I sit on the picnic table and look out toward the back of our lot. After Cassie dug Roland up from his grave on the Hill and gave him a proper funeral, we had him cremated and buried his ashes out there, right next to my momma. Although I can’t see their graves in the low morning light, I know they’re there. Some people are permanent. Others aren’t.

I pull out my phone and call the hospital to check on Britt. The nurse at the desk puts me on hold, then Dennis is on the phone. “I didn’t mean for her to wake you up,” I say.

“I wasn’t sleeping. Hospital chairs aren’t very comfortable.” His voice is low, and I can hear how tired he is. “He’s been awake some, though. Hard to talk with a mouth full of gauze, and they’re keeping him sedated for the pain. But they said he’ll most likely move to a regular room today, which is great news.”

I’m trying to care. I do care—I mean, he got hit by a truck… Cassie’s truck. If he dies, she could be in a can of worms. And Britt is a man, so I should care because he’s a human being. And I guess I should care because he’s my half brother. But the problem is, I’m trying not to hate him too. “Dennis, do you know if Britt had any dogs growing up?”

He doesn’t say anything. I’m sure that comes off as an odd question, especially when I should be concerned with how badly the kid is going to be messed up after all this. I immediately feel bad for asking. Not this guy’s fault. “Never mind,” I say. “You should get back to him.”

“It’s fine. Stef is with him right now. She’s planning on leaving this afternoon, once he gets moved out of ICU.”

Britt’s mother. Freddy Adams’s wife. I close my eyes and try not to picture them, but no matter how hard I try, I see them standing next to a red Camaro, my dad’s arm around a pretty blonde, and a red-haired boy at his feet.

“Well, keep me posted.” It’s all I can think to say.

“Cats,” Dennis says as I’m about to hang up.

“What?”

“He had cats as a kid. Loves them. We have a Savannah—Balou. It’s damn near a bobcat, which I think is a little weird, but she’s Britt’s buddy. In fact, he’s worried about her more than himself right now.”

“Balou?”
