In the event, Kate Burtonâs âcrazy wallâ didnât throw up any tangible leads, but it at least had the merit of helping the team to thrash out all the different scenarios.
It felt like a constructive session, only interrupted by a bad-tempered call from Richard Keogh to enquire why the police had been âsnoopingâ round his place of work.
âI just called Greeners to check out Keoghâs trip to Lancaster, sir,â Doyle told the DI. âDidnât want to take his word for it. I tried to be discreet.â
âQuite right, Sergeant,â Markham reassured him. âInteresting that Mr Keogh was so sensitive about it.â
There were no other distractions â save for some amicable squabbling over their takeaway â and they continued to review the case until Noakesâs prodigious yawns indicated it was time to adjourn.
âDid Matt Sullivan give you anything on nutters at Hope?â the DS enquired of Doyle as they were finishing up, ignoring Burtonâs disapproving frown at this decidedly inappropriate language.
âHe seemed genuinely mystified, sarge,â was the reply. âI mean thereâs lots of troubled kids, but he never noticed any of them stalking Padgett or Dacre . . . didnât remember anything hinky going on . . .â
âWhen I went back over the student statements, there was something . . .â Burton riffled through her notes. âYes, here it is. Chelsey Preston said, âSo long as you didnât do anything wrong, Miss Padgett was always in your corner. You couldnât count on Mrs Dacre to take your side, but it was different with Miss Padgett. She understood about keeping secrets.ââ
Doyle looked confused, clearly struggling to decode the teenage angst. âI wonder what she meant by that.â
âSounds very different from when I was at school,â Burton said. âIt was always âthem and usâ. None of this stuff about teachers taking your side or being in your corner.â
âYeah,â Noakes chipped in. âBut these days everyoneâs obsessed with letting it all hang out anâ adults being friends with the kids.â Derisive gesture. âI remember getting leathered anâ Mister Sykes â that was our head â shook hands with me afterwards . . . No hard feelings, see.â
The DI was amused to note that Burton looked appalled. That explains a lot, her expression seemed to say.
âWith my lot it was the old, âThis hurts me more than it hurts youâ routine,â he laughed. âAs you say, Kate, itâs a different world nowadays.â
Doyle joined the debate. âBit iffy that stuff about keeping secrets, though,â he said thoughtfully. âI mean, wouldnât a teacher get into trouble cos of safeguarding?â
âDepends on the secret, I suppose,â Burton replied, before adding, âBy all accounts Jayne Padgett was a true professional. I donât see her doing anything unethical.â She looked down at her notes. âChelseyâs the attention-seeking type â a drama queen, if you ask me. Hinting at a mystery could be a way of putting herself in the spotlight.â
âAgreed.â Markham massaged knotted muscles. âWhat about Denise Rooneyâs daughter?â
âCaitlin?â Burton checked the notebook again. âShe didnât mention anything about secrets. Just
