ISABEL

The moment I make it to the inn room, I slam the door shut, like a kid would. I was never one for tantrums, but there’s a rage bubbling inside me I have never felt before. It must have something to do with the mating bond.

How could he? How could Caleb put his job above mine? All right, he has been working for longer than I have, but it doesn’t mean he should stop. We have the Ops in Mexico, too. He could keep working the same way he does here, he just doesn’t want to. This is one of those situations where the guy expects the girl to drop everything for him. Caleb doesn’t have a family, doesn’t have any responsibility but the Ops, and yet he expects me to abandon my entire life for him.

Even if it breaks my heart, I’m not abandoning my family and my job because of a mate. Caleb makes me feel alive and thrumming, but there’s no way he wants me that much. Not if there are conditions to his love.

My wolf paces inside me, but I know she would defend him just because he’s our mate. Just because she wants us bouncing on his cock, feelings be damned. I shake my head hard, opening the to-go box and devouring the Plato de Carnes so fast I’d have a stomachache if I were a human. After throwing the box away and washing my mouth, I sit on the bed and cross my arms, still fuming.

Caleb doesn’t follow me in. He must have stayed back at the restaurant. I bet he’s dancing with someone else, laughing at me. Laughing at my antics.

My wolf whimpers. No, he wouldn’t do that. He’s giving me space if I know anything about him.

He stays away some ten minutes, enough for me to calm down. My wolf rises inside me to the sound of his footsteps and I straighten my spine, grinding my jaw. Caleb knocks twice and waits for me to reply before he comes in.

“Come in,” I say, and wait for him to enter. He does, turning slightly to pass the narrow door. Once he’s inside, Caleb turns to face me. His brows rise so high on his forehead I have to look around myself for the reason behind his surprise. “Oh, yeah. I guess there’s only one bed.”

His face grows stormy. Wow. Is he that disappointed at it? A part of me thought we could share it. Just like in the books, or romance movies. Sharing the bed might push us together. It might help us solve this dilemma.

This tiny problem that is my mate only wanting me if I drop everything to be with him.

I shrug, trying to look impassive. “They might be full or something.” Not that I checked it. Not that I want him to check.

Caleb looks around the room as if a second bed would pop out of the closet. I kick my shoes off and get under the sheets. The cool cotton feels nice against my warm, exposed legs.
