We also had plenty of connectors in our own extended networks. We reached out to any friend with a big personal network or a large number of Facebook friends, appealing to her or him for access to his or her contacts. For Alexandra, these included the international marketing and PR maven Susan Shin, who had access to lists of relevant contacts. It also included Alexandra’s brother Alan, who lives among creative types in Brooklyn and has a large network of friends with a decidedly different vibe from Alexandra’s (you could call them hipsters). These people became key for us, spreading the word far and wide. Many, such as Alexandra’s friend Heather Lynch McAuliffe, vice president of public relations at J.Crew, and Doug Wurtz, an acquaintance of Alexandra’s who works in finance and invited hundreds of friends in his network, helped kick-start our word of mouth completely unprompted. Alexis meanwhile reached out to her sister Fleur Keyes, a decorator in New York City who was tapped into New York’s and Boston’s twentysomething scene, and to friends and family in San Francisco and Los Angeles, and childhood friends and family in South Carolina.
