The Coworker

Tasha Quinn answered her front door but didn’t look happy to see the four investigators.

“You were there at that wedding this afternoon,” she said, preparing to shut the door again. “I’m sorry. If you had any problems with your paperwork, you’re going to have to wait a few days to get it straightened out. There’s a lot going on right now.”

“We’re aware of that,” said Detective Peters.

“And we’re not here because of a problem with our paperwork,” said Ryan.

“Though we do appreciate the confirmation that you were at the courthouse and able to see our group there,” said Heather. “We thought the curly blonde-headed woman who might have worked there matched your description, but you just confirmed how late you were at the building.”

“I don’t understand,” Tasha said, curling her hair around her finger.

Ryan and Detective Peters showed her their badges, and she stopped trying to close the door. They introduced themselves and the private investigators.

“So, you were at the courthouse this afternoon?” Heather prompted.

“That’s right. I do work there,” said Tasha, crossing her arms. “I didn’t know you were police and P.I.s. I thought you were there for a wedding.”

“We were,” said Heather. “Which was why it was particularly upsetting when we came across a clerk’s dead body.”

“Did you know that Oswald Walker was murdered?” asked Ryan.

“My boss told us not to come back in after lunch because the police were looking into Oswald’s death,” said Tasha.

“And why were you late going to lunch?” Amy asked bluntly.

“Because…” Tasha looked down at the ground. “Well, I suppose you better come inside.”

She opened the door and led the way to her living room. A tabby cat looked up at them as they approached and made room on the couch as they all took seats. The cat decided that he particularly liked Detective Peters and kept rubbing against the officer’s legs. Peters tried not to laugh at the tickling sensation as he wrote down potential clues in his notebook.

“How much do you know about Oswald Walker?” asked Tasha.

“Really just that he was strangled to death after my friend’s wedding,” said Amy.

“Our friend thought he was a nice man,” said Heather. “He was accommodating with her wedding so she could have the time that she wanted.”

“She didn’t know the real Oswald,” said Tasha. “And it’s probably a good thing too. If he was acting nice, he was probably getting close to ruining her life.”

“What do you mean?” asked Amy.

Tasha sighed. “I don’t know how much you already know. Are you trying to trick me?”

“Ms. Quinn,” said Heather. “We’re trying to catch a killer. That’s all we’re after. And if you can help us, we’d appreciate it.”

The cat meowed, and Peters pet his head. “He seems to be a very friendly cat.”

“He’s the thing I love most in this world,” Tasha said.

Hoping it would encourage her to talk, Heather began talking about her own pets. “I have a dog and a cat. My dog is obsessed with donuts and Cupcake, the kitten, basically thinks she’s a dog.
