Pyramid Power: Pondering the Competitive Pyramid Framework
The competitive pyramid framework supercharges an existing competitive experience by extending the thrill of competition to all aspects of interaction and offering more ways for your users to win.
This framework, similar to Xbox Live’s popular achievement model, expands the competitiveness of an activity by creating a pyramid of challenges (see Figure 7-4).

Figure 7-4: The competitive pyramid framework expands the competitiveness of an activity by creating a pyramid of challenges.
At the lowest level are dozens of new mini challenges that test a wide variety of skills. The next level up features categorical scores that compare players’ skills in particular specializations. At the top level is a site-wide competition that compares players’ point totals across all categories.
The competitive pyramid framework is designed for existing game-like experiences, such as traditional online/social games and prediction communities.
Examples of types of sites that might benefit from the pyramid challenge framework include the following:
Test and quiz sites: Great for communities that offer tests and quizzes in a competitive environment, it supports a bigger game connecting smaller performance wins.
Prediction communities: The competitive pyramid framework is a powerful way to boost user contributions. It lets users compare points across categories and celebrate the best contributors.
Games and social gaming: This framework offers an Xbox Live kind of achievement, adding challenges throughout the community to guide engagement and ongoing participation.
Why does the competitive pyramid framework work? Here are a few reasons:
Competition: A contest for a prize, badge, or honor, is one of the oldest forms of recreation. Users already in a game environment have proven that they like to win. With even more opportunities to compete and win, players are more deeply engaged and challenged by the variety of competitions.
Specialization: By pursuing a particular skill or expertise, a user is able to focus her efforts and increase the chances of victory against a broad competitive base. Victory feeds ambition for further victory and encourages players to expand into further specializations, creating a continuous cycle of victory and engagement.
Challenges: Users are kept stimulated when new objectives arise. When there are multiple game layers to an experience, with multiple areas to level-up and win, players are motivated to stay engaged. With multiple game layers to a site, users maintain higher levels of interest and involvement.
You’ll learn more about the competitive pyramid framework in Chapter 8.
