âI understand,â she says. âThere was a fight.â
I nod.
I sign, âScared.â
âWho was scared? You?â
I nod.
âWas your mum scared?â
I nod.
âDid your dad make you scared?â
I look at her. I write:
There was
âThere was what? A fight?â
I shake my head.
âThere was a knife?â
I shake my head.
âThere was⦠I donât know⦠There was someone? I canât guess, Theo.â
I nod my head and nod my head. There was someone. There was.
âSomeone? Who?â she asks and she sits closer and looks down at the paper so she can see the someone.
I write down something. I write down a name, a name I think is right.
âWhoâs that?â she asks.
I tap the name with my pencil. I donât know how to spell it. I make a sign, a sign that tells her who it is.
âIt looks likeâ¦â she says. âDo it again?â
I make the sign again.
âBut thatâs⦠Oh, oh no.â Her mouth falls open. I think about my pictures. An open mouth means surprise. I donât like surprises but some people do. I donât think Rose likes this surprise.
She tells me a name. It is the right name and I nod my head. Now she knows. Now she will be help. Rose will be help. Rose knows who there was. Rose knows who was there.
âIs that who scared you?â she asks.
I nod.
âIs that who hurt your dad?â
I nod.
âOh Lord, oh Mary, what on earth am I going to do now?â she says. Sheâs talking to Mary again. Whoâs Mary? âHow am I going to keep him safe? How will I get him back to his parents?â
I go back to the floor while Rose talks to Mary and âthe lordâ. I donât know if they are help. I donât know if Rose is help. I line up the spoons, I line up the forks, I line up the knives and the rain makes all the other sounds go away.
I am in my bubble with Rose. Rose can help. I listen to the rain and wait. I wait for Rose to help.
