Chapter Twelve

Almost every night for the next three weeks, Freddie took Bianca out.

They went to the cinema, to various bars, out for several meals, and one night he drove them over to Paihia to see a live band.

Bianca was stunned that he wanted to see so much of her, and that he wasn’t running a mile in the opposite direction at the thought of going steady. Not that they’d discussed it in so many words. After listening to what Elliot had been through, she was determined not to frighten Freddie off by trying to define their relationship.

It seemed like an eternal battle, she thought, between men and women; most girls—even those with a career—longing for the day they could settle down with a house and family and a husband who doted on them, and guys continually resenting the idea of being tied down.

But as the days went by, she began to think that was an unfair conclusion. Dominic, Rafe, and Angus all seemed perfectly happy to be in their monogamous relationships, as had her father when he was alive. She thought that maybe men who claimed to dislike the idea of going steady just hadn’t met the right girl. That seemed to be what had happened with her brother.

According to Karen, Elliot was anti-commitment, but the more Bianca heard about what had happened, the more she thought that wasn’t the case at all. He wasn’t anti-women or anti-marriage or anti-children. He’d told their mother that he’d made the mistake of staying with Karen for too long when he’d known he didn’t want to spend the rest of his life with her. Bianca knew he should have ended it sooner, but she was glad he’d done it now rather than marry Karen out of a misplaced sense of loyalty that would almost certainly have meant divorce somewhere down the line.

Freddie had issues, there was no doubt about it. He bore a deep dislike for his father, and, she thought, although he’d never said in so many words, a frustrated resentment toward his mother for having put up with her husband’s mistreatment of her and her children. His inherent fear that he would somehow turn out like his father had stopped him from entering into any serious relationships. So the fact that he now appeared willing to see Bianca, to go on dates without them leading to sex, meant something to her, and she was determined not to destroy his tentative trust by pushing him too hard.

Instead, they spent their time getting to know each other. She told him about her desire to see the countries around the Mediterranean—Italy, Greece, France, and Spain, and they talked about the Greeks and the Romans and the sites they’d love to visit. They discussed sport and argued about politics and religion, and listed their top ten movies and books.

During the day, she made sure to leave him to himself, although she saw him often, working on the new shelving system that Roberta had asked him to make for the kitchen, or coming and going with dresses in plastic sheaths for deliveries.
