Chapter 23

I was desperate to make them understand why a November wedding couldn’t happen. “Even if someone could promise my dad’s memory loss isn’t a result of anything serious, we’re not even close to ready. I don’t even have a dress yet.” I dipped my chin to my chest in guilt over my lie to the girls. “I shouldn’t have pretended otherwise, but saying it out loud only stressed me out more.”

“My fault,” Bridget said with a full lower lip.

“I accept full responsibility. I should have been more realistic. Planning a wedding around the release of my first novel was too much.”

Hannah smirked. “If you ask me, your future husband should have let you bask in the glory of your debut rather than hijack it by proposing.”

In defense of my man, I leapt off the couch, nearly knocking over the can of beer I was holding. It was the only alcoholic beverage currently stocked in Jonathan and Bridget’s apartment and I was desperate. “It’s not Nicholas’s fault!” I could never think of getting a proposal and a book deal in the same night as anything other than magical. “But maybe we should have set a date further in the future,” I conceded in a softer voice.

“You had no way of knowing how you would handle the transition from book blogger to published author,” Caroline said.

I grunted. “You mean badly?” I took a sip of beer and snarled. Pabst Blue Ribbon tasted nothing like rose prosecco.

Smiling kindly, Caroline said, “I mean humanly.”

“Two of the four times you went dress shopping, I distracted you from your mission.” Bridget’s quivering chin suggested she was on the verge of tears.

I darted a glance at Hannah to gauge her reaction to more blubbering, but she was silent. Since I couldn’t deny Bridget’s statement, I simply blew her a kiss to let her know it was a forgivable offense.

“What if I were to tell you I found a way to solve your dress problem. Would it change things?”

The intercom must have rang again without my hearing it because somehow Nicholas was standing in the living room. He looked delicious in an olive crew-neck t-shirt, tan shorts, and khaki leather boat shoes. Before I could answer his question, Hannah approached him. “It’s the groom himself. Remember me?” She batted her long eyelashes.

Nicholas gave her an amused smile. “Bridget told me you agreed to talk some sense into Kim. How can I thank you?”

Hannah’s gaze took a slow expedition from Nicholas’s feet up to his face and she smiled slyly. “I can think of a few things, but Kimmie here would probably object.”

I stood by Nicholas’s side. “Yes, she would.” I looked up at him, hoping to share a moment, but he wouldn’t meet my eyes.

Hannah laughed. “I’m teasing. Another man already has my heart anyway.” She motioned toward Nicholas. “Let’s hear your brilliant idea for suiting Kim up for the big day.”

Finally, Nicholas looked at me. “It turns out not everyone thought A Blogger’s Life was vapid and boring.
