Choosing a Style

There is no end to the styles of beer you can brew, or the variations within each style. If you like a microbrewed or imported brew, why not try to replicate it in your own home brewery? You can also take advantage of the hundreds of different kinds of can kits available and experiment with modifying them according to certain beer styles.

Basing a recipe on a can kit is one way for beginning brewers to approach beer styles. Another method is to try to match your recipe to a style description. We’ve included a chart (shown at right) showing target specific gravity, alpha acid units, comments, and amounts of flavoring hops for each style. If you know the basic parameters for a style and the ingredients that go into it, there’s no reason that you can’t create recipes for that style.
