CHAPTER 22
Lucy
Her mother had said not to talk. It will call them. Be invisible, Lusine, and wait for your time, she’d said. Not one word. Not ever. So she hadn’t spoken. Not even to Tommy, who was her friend. But this was different, wasn’t it?
Megan was leaving without understanding. Understanding that there was danger. Lots of it. More than even Tommy and James and all the rest of them knew. But Lucy knew, only she couldn’t tell them. Could she?
She had to do something, though. But what? She’d watched the car speed away—the car that Megan was in—watched until the lights from it had faded completely while trying to think of something.
It had been several years since she’d gotten here. She’d done her very best to be invisible and it had worked. But if she drew attention back to herself, there could be trouble.
The moon was bright tonight. Lucy wondered if that had something to do with Megan’s rushed decision to leave. In a few years when she turned sixteen she’d know what that was like, to be swayed by the moon. If she lived to be sixteen.
She went down to the big TV room, to the door to Tommy’s workshop. Tilting her head, she watched him work. She liked to do that. Liked how his eyebrows drew together when he worked on something difficult. How his big fingers could build tiny things, how he could be so gentle with them even though she knew he was very strong.
Part of her wished to talk to him, and tell him everything. Tell him her past, her secrets, her true name, and trust he would protect her. But telling him all those things would draw attention. She couldn’t do that. Not until she turned sixteen. Then she’d tell them her secrets.
Except Megan didn’t have that long. Someone in the pack needed to find her before something dark did. Dark and deadly or darkly beautiful, the result would be the same. Megan would die and that would be bad.
She needed to speak. Needed Tommy to realize and help.

“TOMMY,” SHE SAID. Her voice sounded strange, different. But it had been three years since she’d last spoken. Her accent wasn’t as noticeable either.
“Just a second,” he said, focused on his project.
“Tommy!” she said again. Louder. Because she could.
“Lucy?” Tommy jumped off his chair. “You’re talking?” He grabbed her shoulders. “OMG, you’re talking!”
“Yes, because—” she began but was cut off with a squeak. Tommy had picked her up like she was nothing more than some rag doll and spun her around.
“Say something more,” he said, grinning, as he set her down.
“Megan left.”
That took the smile off his face.
“What?”
“She ang-angry about James and noes and she went and got car,” she said, fast, trying to not wince about her accent. “You have to get her before the bad zings do—”
“Wait, slow down,” he said, the smile half back on his face. “Megan took one of the cars? How’d she even know the combination?”
Lucy shook her head, because what did it matter? “Make her come back.
