“He who finds a wife, finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord.” Proverbs 18:22

When Sierra eyed her, the lady smiled. “I’m sure you’re wondering what I’m doing here. This is awkward, but my presence is necessary for a new reason.”

The king curved a hand around Sierra’s waist possessively.

The lady-in-waiting eyed the move but continued, “I will draw a portrait of you both after the ceremony. I’m an expert painter, and I studied at the Royal Academy of Spain. And I can create a fast portrait and fill in the details when things settle down and nobody is searching for you two to kill anymore.” Silence trailed her words. “I won’t ruin your wedding, please. Although it’s a bit awkward to stand as witness for the man you should be marrying while he weds someone else, please know that I’m happy for you.”

The lady tapped a drawing pencil on her lap. “Like I said yesterday, I won’t marry someone who loves somebody else. So, before my father realizes we’re all missing and comes after you two, I suggest we proceed with this process.”

Compassion warmed her chest for this lady who found herself in a peculiar situation. But Sierra hadn’t planned on falling in love with the king. And surely, the king didn’t intend to fall in love with her either. It simply happened, leaving them to deal with the outcome. She glided across the room, pausing before the lady who would have been her queen, the fullness of her heart spilling out in words. “I thank you for your magnanimity. The king was indeed yours by law, but you honored our love by releasing him from his commitment to marry you. And the Lord, my God Himself, will provide you a man of your own.”

When the lady-in-waiting nodded, Sierra’s nerves eased a bit.

“Please, let us get started.” Ache waved a massive hand, at which everyone came into focus.

The king stood, put on his regal attire at the center of the room. Then he set his golden crown atop his head as the guard placed a smaller crown in his hand. He beckoned to Sierra, who drew closer, then stood opposite him, again feeling the weight of this moment.

“I will be one of the witnesses to your marriage.” The lady-in-waiting stood adjacent to them, and they faced Chemira, who opened a worn Bible. “King Peralta, and, Sierra, I am here for the sole purpose to serve as a priest and officiate your wedding ceremony.”

He nodded to Ache. “Ache informed me that, if you and the king left without marrying, it will be considered an elopement. Therefore, to preserve his throne, as required and mandated by Lanzarote law, on this day of his thirtieth birthday, he must be married. The marriage must be consummated now. Then you can both leave, and the throne will remain his upon his eventual return and to his descendants.”

Whatever God has joined together let no man put asunder. Sierra stared at the king’s hand clutching the crown.
