He sat on the edge. “My message told you how Pete Zendel notoriously bought Snowy Peaks, so I’ll skip that part. Now, I have it on good authority Pete Zendel has designed something similar to The New Rulebook, and it’s on its way here. His complex was seized by authorities, and as you know, his gadgets are all locked up. First thing he needs is a stable power supply to start over.”

“Why did he come for Snowy Peaks? What’s here for him?” I curled my toes into the bedspread for warmth in lieu of a blanket.

“His biggest problem is, he has no steady power source. All power grids for the North East region run through Snowy Peaks. Major cities, you name it, they all cut through here.”

“Is that what he wants? Just power?”

“Yes.” He nodded. “My strong guess is Zendel is after the power grid. It doesn’t fail during storms or blackouts. When a hurricane swept through the entire State, it didn’t touch here. More than enough foliage held off the winds. The undulating topography provides a constant shield and natural barrier to disasters. We’ve had no earthquake in the last hundred years. No forest fires either. Nothing happens here. That’s what he wants. A stable condition to build something you never want messed with.”

I made a mental note. “Might there be anything else he’s after?”

He rubbed his jaw. Then his eyes lit up. “It’s been rumored there’s an ancient rail line cutting through from here to Delaware into Philly. It then lines up with a direct access point from Pennsylvania into Canada. I haven’t seen it, but if it existed, that would spell boom for Zendel’s enterprise. The only rail line I’m aware of was decommissioned for so long, it’s only designated for sightseeing.”

It was all coming together. The full picture of why Zendel chose Snowy Peaks. Freedom, electrical power, and rail access was priceless to someone like him. He could do almost anything here. “With little funds, by his standards, Zendel could fix the rail and have it up and running in no time. And he alone would know where it was.”

Tom scratched his head. “He can then fast-track his goods, bypass customs’ enforcement, and move them inspection-free cross-country.”

I sniffed. “More like international. He deals in illegal trade. We can’t let him do this.”

“We’re the only ones who can stop him.” He pointed. “You are.”

I fell silent.

“I learned that a company liaised with him is delivering something crucial in two days’ time. Might be the device similar to The New Rulebook. If we’re going to stop it, we have to do so now.”

I breathed deeply to steady myself for the next question. “Why didn’t you call for external law enforcement? Why me? I’m not a cop.”

He raised a hand. “Because, if what they’re bringing has close configuration to The New Rulebook, you’re the only one among the good guys who could recognize it. Rumor has it, that you saw it work before it shut down. Others who saw it work were bad guys.
