Ruby was surrounded by college kids. Beautiful, bronzed and buff. She was sitting with them, in front of their Jeeps, with her new best friend, Tammy and another young girl. Tammy was wearing Ruby’s sunglasses and Ruby had someone’s American flag bandana wrapped around her head. The music that was blasting out of the Jeep’s stereo had changed from 70s’ rock to repetitive dance music, but Ruby was feeling no pain.

“Hey, grab two more of those beers,” Ruby said to Tammy. “I want to show you something.”

Tammy whistled to one of the boys and they tossed her two cold ones from a cooler in the open back of the Jeep.

Tammy handed Ruby one of the dew-covered cans as Ruby reached behind her and dug around in her beach bag. “This is how we Buffalo Girls do it back home,” Ruby announced to the eager group of tanned idols watching her. “Three small shakes,” she said, moving the can up and down slowly, three times. “Remind you of anything?” she teased the boys, who were paying close attention. “Then you pop and unlock!” Ruby whipped her hand out of her beach bag and slammed it against the bottom of the can. “Pop!” A little beer sprayed onto her and Tammy, but Ruby put her thumb over the hole fast, bringing the can up to her mouth. “And unlock.” She wrenched the tab on the top of the can back, placing her mouth over the hole in the bottom of it, to accept the rush of beer that instantly shot down the back of her throat.

The crowd of kids watched in awe as this woman chugged the entire can of beer in seconds.

“Back home, we call that a backfire!” Ruby announced and her oiled-up groupies exploded in cheers, applauding her bikini-clad vaudevillian act.

“Let me try!” Tammy was all excited.

Ruby turned to her. “Okay, shake the can slowly, three times.”

Tammy locked eyes with the dark-haired boy on her left, taunting him with her hand movements. “One, two, three.”

“Okay, now poke this through the side of it.” Ruby handed her the keys that she used for hers.

Tammy hesitated.

“It’s easy, Tammy. Just slam it right in there. Don’t worry about the key,” Ruby encouraged her.

Tammy still hesitated, raising the key up to Ruby. “Is that—blood?” The entire key was covered in it. Tip to bow. Some of it was wet, reconstituted by the beer and it was dripping onto Tammy’s hand.

Ruby snatched the keys from her. “No—that’s just paint. I opened a can of paint with it this morning. I forgot. Probably don’t want to use that.” She shouted over to the boy that Tammy had locked eyes with, “Hey, make yourself useful and give her your keys!”

The boy tossed his keys and Ruby did her best to carry on, getting Tammy to refocus on the task. “Just slam it into the beer.”

As Tammy went for it, sending beer shooting out all over Ruby and the others. Ruby pulled inside herself—tucking the blood-stained keys back into her bag and her spirit back into its hiding place.
