Chapter

Thirteen

The truck jerked to the left as Tilda swerved to avoid hitting a squirrel that ran out into the middle of the road.

“Damn thing’s dumber than Dodo,” she grumbled. “Would serve its furry butt right if I’d flattened it like a pancake.”

I watched it scramble across the pavement and into the grass. “But you didn’t, so it gets to live another oblivious day.”

“That’s a lot of sass out of someone who told me they were done talking to me last night.” She smacked my leg with her wrinkled hand. “Out with it. What’s got your knickers in a knot?”

I didn’t want to fight anymore. We’d spent a couple of hours going around and around, with her avoiding all of my questions about how the lawyer had shown up and who the stranger was. When she dared to insult Maria again after my friend didn’t answer her mirror call, I’d had enough.

“You’ve got me trapped in your truck, driving me to some place but you won’t tell me where, and you expect me to be happy?”

I snorted. “We?”

“Yes, we.” She glanced over at me. “I may be a cantankerous old hag now, but I’m still your aunt. And whatever your troubles are, you’re sharing them with me.”

“Funny, because whenever I ask you to share, you shut me down.” My cheeks burned from instant regret, but with us both trapped together in the truck, I couldn’t think of a better time to confront her.

“Zara, I’m well aware of how you feel about me not telling you everything. I wish you would trust that I’ve got my reasons when I don’t fill you in on every little detail of every little thing.”

My fingers touched the handle of the door as I considered opening it and jumping out. “When it’s related to my life on the line, I would think that’s more than a little detail.”

“Listen, you’re going to get answers, but some of it… well, it isn’t my place to tell you.”

“What does that even mean?” I yelled, my voice filling the cab of the truck.

“I don’t know how many times I have to say this until you believe me, but I’ll say it again and again until you hear it. Trust. Me.”

Those two words hung in the air between us. I contemplated them as
