Prem swore under his breath as he sprinted towards the airport exit. His feet pounded noisily on the tiles, but not as loudly as the thundering of his heart. He couldnât believe heâd been so careless as to book a ticket for the same flight as his targets. Maybe his head injury had affected him more than heâd thought.
Premâs head swivelled around as he reached the open door. He could feel the cool night air on his clammy skin, could almost smell the scent of freedom above his overpowering fear.
Hinkley was quickly gaining on him, was now only thirty metres away. A security guard lumbered forward at the edge of Premâs vision. He could feel the net closing in, the noose tightening around his neck.
Even time in jail would be akin to a death sentence. The boss had contacts everywhere, especially in prisons. Prem would be as good as dead.
But he would rather die trying to make his escape, as a free man. With honour.
Without hesitation, Prem reached round and whipped the Berretta from under his jacket. He didnât even have to think about aiming. Expert marksmanshipâkillingâwas to him as natural as breathing.
The photographer skidded in his tracks at the sight of the weapon pointed in his direction. As Prem squeezed the trigger, Hinkley leaped to the side.
The action was too little, too late.
Prem spun around and raced away from his pursuers, disappearing into the darkness. But not before he saw Hinkley crumple onto the tiled floor, a crimson stain spreading across his shoulder.
Prem smiled as he made his escape. He had completed his assignment just in time.
