His head flew off.
Then, his body slumped over sideways. The head that had once sat atop his shoulders now spun as it bounced across the floor. Once the head was gone, the body it left behind gushed blood from the gaping wound.
Oh, so this is what it means when they talk about it raining blood... thought Raraja.
âMay you have a good death under the protection of God...â prayed Aine as she bathed in the falling drops of ichor. âWhew.â She exhaled, then spun around.
âHey now, Iarumas-sama!â
Whoosh! Her sword whipped right past Rarajaâs nose to point directly at the man in black.
âThat wasnât very noble of you! Just watching like that...â
Iarumas pushed aside the tip of the blood-drenched sword with some irritation, then shrugged his shoulders. âI thought heâd manage without my intervention.â No panic, no surprise. No concern or relief either. He spoke as if he was only stating the facts. âSimply gaining experience in the dungeon isnât enough to say youâve raised your level.â
Taking a break. Resting in town. That was the important thing, Iarumas explained dispassionately. Then, he continued, saying, âIt was the same way for me... Probably.â
When Iarumas stepped forward to clap Raraja lightly on the shoulder, his boots made a squelching sound in a puddle of blood. He then crouched next to Garbage, staining his knees red as he peered at her face.
âIâm pulling them out. Donât move.â
She just whined in response. There was a jingle as the silver needles scattered across the floor. Though the darts were thin and sharp, they fortunately hadnât gone in all that deep.
With the needles pulled out of her eyelids, Garbage hesitantly opened her blue eyes.
âArf!â
Once heâd seen her eyesâlike two deep pools of clear waterâblink a few times, Raraja let out a sigh of relief. Maybe...heâd been trying not to notice them too much before now.
âAh, jeez...â Sister Ainikki let out a resigned sigh, seemingly unconcerned by the blood splatter. Then, she noticed the disbelief on Rarajaâs face. âOh,â she murmured, looking around before adding, âgosh.â Her cheeks flushed redâthe color of roses, not bloodâand she began fidgeting awkwardly. âIâm sorry. Look at what Iâve done.â
Thoroughly embarrassed, she held out the greatsword like it was a fashionable piece of clothing and asked, âWill you be buying this?â

Having added one more two-handed sword to the list than theyâd originally planned, their shopping trip ended without further incident.
It was now evening, and Raraja trudged down the main street in Scale, a weary look on his face.
âThis wasnât worth it...â he muttered.
Beside him walked a thoroughly apologetic Aine. âIâm terribly sorry...â she said. Her silver hair swayed in the golden light of sunset as she bowed her head.
When she was that sincere, it made Raraja feel awkward. âNah,â he curtly told her. âItâs no big dealâIâm used to being an errand boy.â
In the end, heâd had to carry the body.
âI wonât ask you to clean up the blood, but donât leave a headless body lying in the middle of my store. Itâs
