Chapter Eight

Lily managed to get through the rest of the weekend even though she longed to drag the woman outside onto the street and throw her luggage out with her. Instead, she tried to concentrate on looking after her daughter and helping out at the chapel as Evan preached his sermon.

As soon as Monday morning arrived though, she had a plan. She waited to see if Hannah Griffiths was back at school and when she saw she was indeed fit and well, she asked her to take over the class by reading them a story and helping them to draw pictures about the story afterwards. That would take up at least a half hour or so she estimated.

Meanwhile, she sneaked back into the house and hid upstairs in her bedroom behind the wardrobe. She heard Olwen talking to the child and all sounded fine, she was saying something about taking her out for a walk later. She questioned herself whether she had got things wrong and perhaps if the medicine were for her mother-in law-herself and not for her child.

But then, after a few minutes she heard her climbing the stairs, still talking to the child and going into her own bedroom. Lily came out from behind the wardrobe and taking off her shoes, tiptoed along the landing until she stood outside her mother-in-law’s room. The door was ajar. She watched Olwen place Mollie down on her bed and then go to pick something up from her dressing table. Lily held her breath as she saw it was the key to the trunk that her mother-in-law held in her hand. Then, taking it over to the trunk, she watched in horror as the woman unlocked it, rummaged inside and came out with the bottle of medicine.

Surely she must be mistaken? She wouldn’t give it to her own granddaughter? Picking up a small spoon from the dressing table, she poured out the medicine and held it towards the child.

“Come along now, Mollie,” she said, in a sickly sweet voice, “this will help you to sleep!”

Lily stood grounded to the spot, frozen with terror and shock. She had to do something quick, but felt momentarily helpless and powerless. Her strong maternal, protective instinct, took over as she heard Mollie start to cry. The child obviously didn’t like to take the medicine and it was being forced upon her.

Barging out from her hiding place, Lily shouted, “Stop that at once, you evil witch!” Olwen let go of the child, so that she fell back on the bed, but was otherwise unharmed.

The woman’s mouth fell open. She’d obviously not expected to get caught in the act.

“S…S…She’s not well this morning,” she stuttered, when she had found her voice.

“Oh yes, and what happens to be the matter with her?” Lily said, pushing past the woman almost knocking her flying to pick up her daughter.

“I heard her coughing violently.”

“Now, let me tell you this, you old crone... I know what you are up to. I took that bottle over to Doctor Owen and he confirmed my suspicions.
