The following day after the funeral, Gabriel already had left with His Majesty’s retinue to The Ottoman Empire. The girls and I preferred to wait out the bad weather and went to clean Mama Nica’s room. I divided the rugs into three equal parts and gave them to Anca, Teodora, and Lia to use as dowery in their future weddings. Anca and Lia bowed in gratitude but didn’t exude as much excitement as Teodora, who couldn’t stop talking about her betrothed. “When I get married to Solomonarul, our house will look so good. Did I tell you he has the most beautiful red hair?” she said to Lia. “And he is so kind and brave.”

I didn’t want to burst her bubble since everyone else knew Solomonarul from a different perspective, but then again, after meeting Teodora, he did seem like a changed man. “Now that Mama Nica is not with us, are you going to stay at the castle?” I asked.

“I’m leaving as soon as I am married,” said Teodora while folding her rugs.

“I did not doubt it one bit.” I smiled.

“I am returning to my family,” said Anca.

“You are?” we all asked in unison.

“After I help Milady with her quest, I will leave the castle. Without Mama Nica, life at the castle would be unbearable for me,” Anca said, and I could feel the pain in her words.

“Did I tell you Solomonarul flew dragons a long time ago?” Teodora asked Lia.

“You speak at the most inopportune of times,” I said.

“What? What did I say?” Teodora retorted, still petting her rugs as if they were a cat.

“Never mind. What about you, Lia? Are you staying?” I asked.

“How? When you’re all leaving me,” she said and burst into tears.

We rushed to console her.

“Milady is leaving further away, but Teodora and I will be in the village,” said Anca. “You won’t be alone.”

“It’s not the same,” Lia said, and for the first time, I could see how much she needed us. How much she thrived in a group setting, and how she, for the time being, needed friends in her life, especially after losing Mama Nica.

“We will find a way, Lia,” I said. “You will not stay alone.”

“I’m not ready to say so many farewells,” Lia said.

“Well, we still have time,” I said. “We all are going on a girls’ quest. Isn’t it thrilling?” I hugged her.

“It is. I’ve heard Anca talk about all your quests, and I wished to go on one as well,” Lia said and smiled through the tears.

“Let’s wait till the rain goes away,” I said.

“Rain, go away already,” Lia yelled.

“Yes, rain, go away already. We want to go on an adventure,” I said.

Anca and Teodora joined in our protests, and in no time, we began chanting, “rain, rain go away,” spinning in a circle till we fell on Mama Nica’s rugs.

It took three more days till the dark cloud dissipated, the skies opened, and the birds began chirping again. It could’ve been Solomonarul or us, or maybe the rain had taken its natural course.
