Ruby walked into her apartment about a half-hour after she and Sybil finished talking. She was confused, and her head hurt from thinking about the mess that was her life. Fortunately, when she flipped on the light switch, a warm glow illuminated the living room.

“Thank you, Alison,” Ruby said out loud.

After checking her mail and eating a late lunch, she laid on her couch, snuggled under a blanket, and fell asleep. It was late when she opened her eyes next. She quickly dressed in a pair of black pants and a white shirt, prepared to work at the barbecue. The drive back to the resort was one she could do in her sleep. Some days she was there more than her place.

“Hey Dottie, welcome back.” Ruby put on an apron and noticed the head chef.

Dottie had returned from a trip to San Francisco. She was the one in charge of the food for the night. Ruby was secretly happy. Eliza was a good chef, but Dottie did a better barbecue.

“Hey. Did I miss anything?” Dottie sharpened a butcher knife.

“No, it was quiet around here. Isn’t it always?”

Dottie clicked her tongue. “That’s why we all love it here.”

“So, have you seen any of the people in the mating auction?” Ruby pulled up a stool and sat at the worktable.

“Well, you know they talked me into doing it?”

Ruby raised an eyebrow. “I didn’t realize that. Are you ready?”

Dottie laughed nervously. “I don’t know. Wednesday and Eliza told me not to worry.” She stopped cutting. “But what if no one bids on me?”

“I can’t imagine that happening. You’re hot. Just remember, it’s for a good cause.”

“Aww you’re sweet. I told Dash he had to save me from humiliation if no one else wanted me.”

“Dash? He’s so grumpy. I don’t picture him as the knight in shining armor.”

“He is not. He’s a sweetheart.” Dottie used her knife to add emphasis to her words. “You just don’t know him like I do.”

“How is it that you know him so well?” Ruby sneaked a piece of meat from the platter.

“He eats lunch with me sometimes.” Dottie’s face pinked.

“Ooooo. I think someone is in love.”

Dottie slammed her utensils on the worktable. “It’s not like that, so stop it.”

Wednesday came in the kitchen. “Ruby—” she pointed to the apron, “—you don’t have to work tonight. Now that you’re in the auction, you don’t have to work it too.”

“You’re in the auction?” Dottie asked.

Ruby’s face burned. She wanted to hide. “I don’t mind working. You’ll be short a pair of hands.”

Wednesday pulled up a stool next to Ruby. “Are you nervous?”

Ruby rolled her eyes. “No. Why would I be? There’s nothing to be nervous about, is there. Should I be nervous?” All her words spewed out in one fast breath.

“Just remember, it’s for a good cause,” Dottie mimicked her from earlier.

Ruby grumbled.

Wednesday said. “You’re fearless. Why would you be nervous about this?”

“What makes you think I’m fearless?” Ruby asked.

“When you first got here, you challenged Caleb at every step when it came to the computer stuff.
