Chapter 9

Ty, Moving Day

It took longer to get Liv and Linnie to move in than I wanted. If it were up to me, I would have sent a moving truck to her place the next day. But that wasn’t happening.

She required a dozen meetings with her ‘girls’ as she called them, to which I was not invited. There might have been a hundred of them. I don’t know.

Then there were exactly three casual, low stress playdates, where she and I and Linnie got to know each other. Once at the playground. Once at the Central Park Zoo and once at a diner. I didn’t mind those at all. I enjoyed spending time with Linnie, a bright and happy child who loved music and animals and the color purple. “But purple like pink, not purple like blue,” she told me, making sure I understood.

I was willing to spend time understanding. I didn’t mind playdates with Linnie.

I had fallen head over heels with my daughter and every time we separated I felt like I was cast adrift.

I’d started using my non-Linnie time to write songs for her. Songs with, no one would ever believe, purple rainbows and golden retrievers and eyes that were like stars in the evening.

My punk cred was blown and I didn’t mind one bit.

Liv also required that she and I meet, alone, without her girls and without Linnie, so that we could sort some things out between the two of us and discuss boundaries and rights and what exactly it meant for Liv to move into my house. Once. One meeting with just the two of us.

It was, although she didn’t want me to call it that, a date.

She’d let slip that she loved sushi, so I took her to the best sushi restaurant in the city, where we sat at the counter in the stunning simplicity of the restaurant and ordered omakase, where the chef brought us a selection of courses over two hours.

I ordered a bottle of sake and we sat and talked.

Or more precisely, she explained how it was going to be.

I could buy Linnie anything I wanted, of course, as she was my daughter but she was not looking to extort me for money, so no more presents for her. No more offers of money or allowances or any of that, or buying her dresses like for the wedding. She’d tried to give the stunning gold dress back and I told her it was hers. That apparently had insulted her. She said she was an independent woman and seemed to be proud of standing on her own two feet after being kicked out of her house at twenty.

“But what about your family?”

“My family?” She was adorably puzzled.

“Yes. Mack, Jenn and Brooklyn. Can I buy them gifts?”

“You want to… why?”

“Because they saved you. They helped you when I wasn’t able to. I owe them for taking care of you and my daughter and they deserve to be rewarded for that.”

Her big blue eyes got shiny, like sapphires.
