TWENTY-SIX

15 SLEEPS UNTIL CHRISTMAS

SHAE

We spend the day at the farm, mostly cuddled up on Nick’s big couch, watching movies in new pairs of cozy slippers Holly brought as snow falls gently, the girls still in awe that the elf followed them to the farm, while Nick runs around, putting out fires.

A part of me feels unbearably guilty this man is wasting so much time on me and my little family during his busiest time, but also . . . I don’t.

It could be some kind of Stockholm syndrome, could be the holiday season, could be the excessive amount of time together or his constant reassurances, but for one reason or another, this . . . relationship, friendship, whatever you want to call it feels like it was always in place. Like this isn’t new, the girls and me coming to spend a weekend with him. It feels natural.

“I don’t want to go,” Harper says, her hands on her hips, her face near anger.

“Me neither,” Ruby says. “Minnie is going to miss me!”

I don’t mention that the small horse she has grown worryingly attached to in less than two days most definitely will not miss her and will not even notice she is gone, but instead, I let her live in her delusion.

It’s good for girls to have a healthy sense of delusion.

“I’ll make sure I tell her every day you say hi,” Nick says, grabbing the big bag of our stuff off the kitchen table and hoisting it over his shoulder to bring it out to the car. I look at him and open my mouth to tell him no, I’ve got it, but he instantly glares at me. “If you try and tell me you’ll carry this, I’m gonna lose it, sugar.” I roll my eyes.

But I don’t fight him on it.

Progress, I suppose.

“Alright, girls,” I say, looking to my daughters in their coats already. “Let’s go. You’ve got school tomorrow, and Ruby, I’m pretty sure you still have homework.”

I expect an argument.

An “I don’t want to go to school tomorrow” or a “no, I don’t have homework” or any of their normal complaints and arguments.

But instead, Harper’s eyes go wide and start to water.

“I don’t want to go,” she says, her voice low and whining in a way I haven’t heard in years.

“Harper—”

“I want to stay here forever.”

God. This girl.

She never asks for anything, not like this, and having her choose this moment to do so hurts.

“I know, honey,” I say because I do. There’s some kind of magic at Finch Farm I can’t quite put my finger on, but it’s in the air. A feeling of calm and comfort.

Maybe it’s just Nick. I think I’m at a point where I can admit that now, if only to myself.

Nick feels like home.

Not in the way that he feels familiar, but in the way that he just . . . fits.

In the way where I feel like when I’m by his side, I can both do anything and be anything and do it all safely.
