CHAPTER 24

Dane took out his small diamond studs and replaced them with the new ones.

“They look good on you,” she commented.

“Thanks,” he muttered without a trace of gratitude. He checked out his reflection in the mirror and then set his eyes on Misty. “Fuckin’ with my cousin was real slimy. I should whip your ass.” He looked at her with searing dark eyes. There was a hint of playfulness, but Misty wasn’t sure.

“Nigga, please!” Misty scoffed, unafraid. If he even laid a hand on her, Brick would gleefully rip his pretty head off.

“But you’re lucky,” Dane added. “See, I don’t put my hands on a female unless I’m showing love. Ya heard?”

“No, you’re lucky,” she stated. Her thoughts drifted to Brick. He looked bone tired when she dropped him off at the apartment after his third job that day. His eyes were sad. He’d been looking really sad a lot lately. Why? she wondered. He had everything he could ask for. A dimepiece to sleep with; all the comforts of home. Hell, they could go out and party on the regular if he wanted to, but Brick didn’t seem to enjoy partying anymore. She looked off in thought. Maybe she was overdoing it—working him like a field slave.

Fuck Brick. He should be grateful that she was able to find him work. His doldrums were starting to get on her nerves. She truly wasn’t in the mood for his depressed, sad face. If he knew what was good for him, he’d better not even think about waiting up for her. If he knew like she knew, his ass better rest his head—try to get a good night’s sleep. He had a lot of work to put in tomorrow.

“I’m serious about my little cousin, yo,” Dane warned, breaking into Misty’s thoughts.

Misty gave a nonchalant shrug. “That wasn’t about nothing.” Misty shook her head. “Trying to get your attention; that’s all.” Stretched out on the king-sized hotel bed, she cocked her head, waiting for Dane’s response. Dane was incredibly handsome. He looked so much like Shane, she found herself staring at him. He acted like him, too. Cocky bastard. He was looking too good in his wife beater and jeans. It took all her willpower not to jump up, unbuckle his belt and reacquaint herself with the bulge inside his jeans. It would be so easy to simply give up the struggle of training this nigga and just throw herself into his arms, surrender the pussy and suffer the consequences.

“Yeah, well, you got my attention. I don’t understand why you would go after my little cousin; mess with his head like that?”

“He’s a big boy.” Misty shrugged, unapologetic.

“Yo, Lil’ Bit, Monroe is family. If you got beef with me, there’s a million other niggas out there for you to fuck with. My cousin is off limits.”

“Your cousin is old enough to make his own decisions. Now, whether or not I fuck with his head is up to you.”

“That a threat?”

“A promise,” she said softly.
