SEVENTEEN

“Baby,” Jaeyong murmurs, his thumbs rubbing circles onto the back of my hands. “I know it’s different now, but I don’t expect my parents to completely change their behaviour towards you, either,” I swear my whole spine becomes jelly and I melt into the driver’s seat, shoulder pressed to it, becoming one with the car’s interior at those words. “They know you.”

“Jaeyong,” I whisper. “We had dinner together once since I got to Seoul, and that’s not enough to know who I grew up to be, who I am now. Think about it. There’s still some of that kid from eighth grade, yeah, but you’re also so different now. It’s the same thing with me, and I want to make a good impression. The best impression. This is different, you know it’s different. This isn’t casual for me.”

Jaeyong nods, thumbs stroking along the back of my hands. “I know it is, I know. Do you want something to eat before we get there? You didn’t eat any breakfast with me this morning, so...you gotta be hungry.”

I shake my head, even if my stomach wails. “I’m a little nauseous.”

“I brought these like motion sickness crackers and I swear they work. Do you wanna try half of one, just to see if it’ll settle your stomach?”

I nod slowly, and Jaeyong’s out the door and knocking on the rear window before I can blink three times. I pop the trunk and there’s some rummaging, and then Jaeyong’s back inside the car with the magic cookie/biscuit thing, and I gingerly eat the half he’s broken off for me, chewing and chewing and drinking a little bit of water to get it down.

“Better?” he asks, nodding at me, a small smile on his stupid handsome face.

I nod, licking at my lips, knowing I’m going to have to apply lip gloss to feel better.

Some people wear mascara, or wigs, or hell, black lipstick to feel bulletproof and invincible, ready to take on the world. I feel ready to conquer everyone and everything when my lips are shiny enough to be seen from outer space.

I swipe on some more of the lip gloss I’m favouring currently, smack my lips in the mirror, turn my head left and right to make sure the gloss catches the light just right, and feel better already. The magic powers of makeup.

“Better now?” Jaeyong asks again, and it’s another nod, a little kissy pout in his direction because I want to see him blush again, and he does, cheeks getting flushed, unable to look at me dead in the eye, even going so far as to point out a non-existent dead bug smear on the windshield, demanding that I put the wipers on to clean it.

“You’re cute when you’re flustered,” I murmur, obliging and turning the wipers on, taking a deep, deep breath through my nose, relaxing my hands on the steering wheel and thinking about the thirty-eight minutes left before I meet the Mins for the first time as Jaeyong’s girlfriend. An invisible fist squeezes around my heart, my lungs.
