Chapter 7

DEAN

Making love to her was the highlight of my life. Better than winning football games or completing a restoration job. The high outweighed riding my motorcycle for the first time. Nothing would ever feel as amazing as sinking into Arielle and feeling her tight walls stretch and suck me in deeper. I’d always known we’d be explosive together, but it was even better.

We belonged together.

Adding a baby to our life would only be an added blessing. My old man had drilled into my head that once I found ‘the one’ my future would become clearer. I used to laugh, but he was right. Everything I ever wanted was within my reach. I had no intention of letting her or my future happiness slip through my hands.

As I watched Arielle chew on a strawberry I’d smuggled out of the resort, I could see an entire lifetime of moments like this. Just the two of us enjoying each other’s company. We sat next to each other at the edge of the surf with our toes in the water. The rest of the world faded away.

“You’re staring,” she said before taking another bite.

“I can’t help it. You have my full attention.”

This trip had been a game changer. I’d once expected to be an eternal bachelor like my older brother. Blake refused to settle down, and he’d recently sworn off dating entirely. He seemed less stressed. After a string of bad dates, I figured he was on to something. I didn’t need love to be happy. I had cars and my crazy, intrusive family. It was enough. At least that’s what I told myself, but not anymore.

She swallowed and licked her lips. “Dean… I wish I knew what you were thinking. When you look at me, there’s an intensity I don’t remember seeing before.”

“It’s always been there. The intensity. The connection. Probably from day one, but you weren’t looking closely.” I stole a bite from the strawberry in her hand and enjoyed the way her breathing changed when my tongue connected with her skin.

“I’ve always seen you, Dean. But you were holding back. This is different.”

“Different good or bad?”

“Neither.” Her lips covered mine. The brief contact made us both shiver. “Feels right. Never hold back again.”

The clouds provided reprieve from the sun, but it was still warm and getting hotter every second. I would have been perfectly content to lounge naked on our private beach, but Arielle had redressed. A layer of clothing divided us, but I planned to remove it as soon as she finished eating.

“I won’t,” I vowed and draped my arm over her shoulder.

Her body curled against mine as she swallowed another mouthful of fruit. Before we’d left the room, I’d emptied the contents of the mini fridge into my bag. I knew she’d need something. Arielle polished off the cheese, crackers and the last of the strawberries. Her stomach stopped growling, and she seemed relaxed and satiated. Several bottles of liquor, water and chocolate bars were all we had left.
