“I’ve never heard how you came to Christ, Robert,” Travis stated as he looked as his friend from across the table. He and Robert, Abby, and Beth were enjoying a rare “adults only” evening out while Jack watched the kids.

“It’s not a very worthwhile story to tell.”

Travis shook his head. “As long as you came to Christ, it’s worthwhile. It may be the most important story you’ll ever tell.”

His friends smiled at him, loving the change they witnessed in Travis. His heart had truly become the Lord’s. He was growing in the Word every day and his spirit became softer with it.

“Well,” Robert said. “I grew up in the church, and so I always had the Word around me. At the age of seven, my mom was reading the Bible to me and I asked her how I could get to heaven. She told me and right then and there, I asked Jesus into my heart. Now, it wasn’t always easy. In fact, at times it was really hard. I didn’t firmly grasp it all until I was about 13, when I rededicated my life to Him. It was still difficult, but then I met this amazing girl in college who loved the Lord with all her heart, and that really helped keep me in line.” He turned to look at his wife. “Oh, wow! Here she is, now!” He kissed Beth’s cheek, and she hugged him tightly, glowing with happiness.

“Abs, you’re up.”

Abby looked at Travis with guarded eyes. “Oh, Trav, you don’t want to hear about that. At least not right now. It’s not a happy story, and I don’t want to ruin the wonderful meal.”

Travis tugged lightly on her hair. “Come on, Abs.”

“Travis, seriously. Not here, okay?”

He looked at Beth, who carefully averted her eyes from Travis, and then to Robert, who shrugged. They then changed the topic to relieve the tension, but Abby’s look remained secretive until she got to Travis’ house. Robert and Beth went in to get their children, and Travis started to do the same.

“Travis?” Abby called hesitantly. He turned. “Would you like to talk now?”

Travis’ eyebrows rose, and then he looked around at the frostbitten trees. “Out here? In this freezing cold?”

Abby shrugged. “Wherever. I do want to tell you, it’s just that I’d rather it be private…you know. Besides, Beth and Robert have heard this story before.”

He nodded understandingly. “Tell you what - how about I go say goodnight to Celia, and then we can have a cup of hot chocolate and talk while sitting downstairs? That way we’ll be warm, comfortable, and have our privacy.”

She nodded and got out of the car to walk beside him into the warmth of the house. Beth and Robert came out just then with their two children following sleepily behind. Beth gave Abby a hug as they crossed paths. “Don’t be afraid to tell him. He’s not going to reject you.” She saw Beth cringe slightly.

“Are you okay?” Abby asked with concern.

“Yeah,” Beth shook her head and took a slow deep breath.
