Leah picked up her wine glass to take a sip but stopped before she did. "Let's just say that I'd be a poor woman if I continually chased after legends." Out of the corner of her eye she caught Sterling's slight grin.

As the first course was being served, Carissa managed to fill the silence with her philosophy on gems. She summarized her remarks by saying, "I, for one, believe the Serpentine exists. From what I've heard, it's a powerful little gem."

"Dr. Jase —" Leah began trying to derail the conversation.

"Please call me Savannah."

"Savannah. Were you named after the city?"

"Yes, and born on a plantation just outside the city limits." Savannah looked at the group but avoided making eye contact with Valentine.

"What type of medicine do you practice?"

"Why, Leah, don't you know this is the famous Dr. Jase from the Jase Institute for research and cancer and other problems at Sandford College in California?" Brittan offered in awe.

"That's the Jase Cancer Research Center, darling," Carissa corrected, ignoring Brittan's error on Stanford University's proper name.

"Oh yeah," Brittan giggled again. "Savannah is Senator Zachary Michael Webster's wife's personal physician, the Georgia senator vying for the presidency in this year's election." Brittan bubbled with excitement.

Leah caught Valentine trying to squelch her building hysteria. Leah poked her under the table.

"Seems the natives are restless tonight," Savannah stared directly at Valentine. Friction filled the air.

Leah flinched at the remark, unaccustomed to such blatant hostility. Grateful for Carissa's ability to defuse the explosive dinner conversation, Leah found herself in the middle of health care reform and women's issues. When dinner finally came to an end, she saw Brittan get up from the table and walk over to Carissa.

"Carissa, honey, I've gotta run." She bent forward, exposing more of her cleavage.

"Leaving so soon?" Savannah peered at the fleshy mounds.

"Yup. I've got midterms tomorrow and I gotta go and study."

"What are you studying?" Leah asked.

"I'm pre-med," Brittan announced proudly.

Savannah put her napkin on the table. "Well, y'all just have to come and see me when you graduate and I'll see about an internship at the clinic." Savannah ran her tongue across the bottom of her upper lip.

"Really? You're not pulling my leg? Oh wow. This is too cool. I'll let you know when I'm free." Brittan bent over to kiss Carissa giving Savannah a full view of her buttocks. "Good night, everyone." She waved and skipped out of the room. Moments later a revving motorcycle could be heard. As Brittan roared off into the night, silence overcame the group.

"She's such a free spirit. The energy in that girl is phenomenal." Carissa laughed. The women stood and strode into the drawing room for dessert. While coffee was served, Carissa wrapped her arm around Savannah's waist and said, "Why don't you and I step out for a moment and enjoy our brandies while these three get to know each other better?"

"Sounds like an excellent idea," Savannah murmured as she was led out of the room.

From behind the bar, Carissa filled two brandy snifters.
