THIRTEEN

Noah jerked the car off the side of the interstate after glancing at Abby. Her face had turned paper white. He slammed the car into Park and took her hand in his.

“Abby, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that.”

She rolled her shoulders, as if shrugging off a heavy weight. “I’m okay, and you have nothing to be sorry for, but what if you’re right? What if I have a sibling?”

He was coming to admire many things about her, especially her fortitude and strength.

“If what you said is true, my whole life is a lie and my parents were dishonest.” She firmed her lips. “They took me to church every Sunday. What if we sat in that pew every week and their lives were full of deception?”

She looked frustrated and upset, and he didn’t like that his careless words were the cause. “I’m just being silly. I’m sure there’s a good explanation for the pictures.”

Her eyes were full of hurt and questions. He was determined to give her the answers she desired, but something else in her expression bothered him.

“Abby, whatever we find out about your parents, you can’t let it shake your faith.”

She snorted and the small sign of normality lifted his spirits.

“This from a man who doesn’t go to church anymore?”

He grinned. “Maybe times are changing,” he joked.

She smiled and laid the picture back in the box. “There could be a million reasons why my parents had these pictures made, and as you cops like to say, I shouldn’t assume anything without proof.”

With things calm now, Noah pulled the rental car back onto the highway. “Absolutely true.”

A comfortable silence filled the vehicle as Noah drove, his thoughts processing everything that had happened in such a short period of time. He also considered Abby’s suggestion about meeting his half sisters. For so many years, he’d blamed his mother for leaving him, but did she really have a choice? Abby had a way of making him rethink his past and look at it from his mother’s perspective.

He pulled in to a paid parking garage and tried to gently shake her awake. She had fallen asleep during the long ride. “We’re here.” She lifted a hand to fidget with her hair and he chuckled.

“Don’t worry, you look fine.”

She gave him a disgruntled look and fished a comb and compact out of her purse. She responded to his interested stare. “I refuse to meet your friends looking like something my dog dragged in.”

He laughed and peered at her purse. “I always wondered what women toted around in those big pocketbooks.”

She sliced him a sharp look. “That’s none of your business, Noah Galloway.”

He held his hands up in mock surrender, then turned serious. “Listen, Abby, you’ve been through a lot. I can easily place you in a temporary safe house until this is over. Your grandmother is secure at the hospital in North Carolina. I’d prefer you to be protected, too.”

Her jaw firmed resolutely. “I’m staying glued to your side until this mess is over.
