Mariel would have said it sucked to be a half-blood but it would just sound like a bad joke. And you name it, she’d heard all of those and then some, lucky girl that she was. She wished that just once Mom and Dad would have done the normal thing, whatever that was. They could have just had a baby before Mom got turned. Or Mom could have finished turning her after she was born.

But no. Instead she was half-human, half vampire, at her most powerful and hungriest for an hour or so around dawn and dusk, but sensitive to daylight and only a little better than a human in full dark. At least that leaves me rush hour, she thought resignedly. No having to settle for drunks and drug dealers in alleyways. She slouched up against the subway station wall and watched the crowds from the offices downtown flood past her.

There. That one might do. She narrowed her eyes and followed a young man in a business suit as he charged past her, cell phone glued to his ear. She just needed a little snack to hold her until dinner. Nothing fatal. Plus he had one of those gym-toned hard bodies and pretty, pretty blue eyes. His blood would probably even taste like wheatgrass or energy drinks. How could she resist?

She unwound from her slouch and trailed after him, just another girl in black on the subway. Her prey dashed up a flight of stairs, then headed for one of the long corridors that ran under the street. Perfect. With any luck, he was headed for one of the side streets that wouldn’t have much traffic on it. Next question: which routine would he fall for—young hooker or homeless cutie? Judging by the way he was yelling on his cell, he didn’t seem very altruistic.

The hunt was beginning to get to her and she sucked in a breath full of subway and greasy food and her quarry. It almost made her bare her fangs. But she hadn’t been that foolish for years. Even here in Manhattan, people noticed that. All she needed was to run into that Van Helsing kid, the vampire hunter who’d been chasing Mom off and on for years. Granted she hadn’t seen him for ages but that kind never really gave up. She shoved the thought aside and concentrated on the pursuit, on the remembered taste of blood, on the hot rush between her thighs when she fed. She licked her lips in anticipation.

“You look just like your mother when you do that.”

She jumped and snarled, too shocked to remember what that would look like. The guy watching her was gorgeous, all black hair and blue eyes and black leather. He could even arch one eyebrow—the left one in this case. He looked familiar, just not like any friend of her mom’s she’d ever seen. She didn’t get too close, just stood there staring at him, waiting for him to say something else.
