SUCCESS BEGINS TO BREW

Eighteen months earlier, I’d been ready to hang up my cleats. Now I had a role as Carson’s backup, and I was learning to embrace it. I was excited to be in such a good environment and part of a successful team. As much as I was itching to contribute on the field, I believed God was working in me. He was showing me that it’s not always about our own personal success; sometimes he calls us to play a supporting role for the people around us.

Just as I’d followed Alex’s schedule in Kansas City, once I arrived in Philly, I started to get acclimated to Carson’s routine. Carson liked to start early, so the whole quarterbacks team would typically get to the complex at 6 a.m. Not all of us were early birds, so this start time required the careful skill, dexterity, and commitment of a “caffeination specialist.”

That would be me.

Tuesdays through Fridays, I’d make my special Bulletproof butter coffee for the three guys in our quarterbacks room and about six coaches. It was quite a process. I had to brew the coffee; put in the butter, the MCT oil, and the collagen protein; and blend the ingredients—and I had to do this three times, since I couldn’t fit nine cups of coffee in the blender at once. After a while, the guys had a running joke that I must have been moonlighting as a barista somewhere.

If the coffee didn’t get me going, I’d usually head over to the sports science wing and spend a few minutes “chilling out” in our cryotherapy chamber—a sauna-like contraption that uses liquid nitrogen to plunge the temperature as low as negative 260 degrees Fahrenheit to stimulate blood circulation, muscle recovery, and brain functionality. It’s as uncomfortable as it sounds, but whenever I got out, I felt so much more alert and refreshed. After three minutes of deep-freezing in the cryo and a hot cup of coffee, I was ready for the day.

I loved working with Carson and with Nate Sudfeld. The three of us got along beautifully, which was a blessing since we spent the majority of our season locked away in a little ten-by-fifteen-foot room that we affectionately referred to as “the QB sanctuary.”

To inject a little personality and charm into the space, Spencer Phillips, Doug Pederson’s assistant, had the room wallpapered. One wall was ocean themed, and another featured a countryside scene with mountains—landscapes that clearly screamed Philadelphia. Or not. We loved it, though. For our part, we hung a few strands of white Christmas lights from the ceiling. Whenever it was time to study game film, the fluorescent overheads went off, the holiday lights came on, and voilà!—we had our own festive, football film–watching environment. We also had a little fridge, and of course my coffeemaker and blender were situated in one corner. A Bluetooth player allowed us to pipe in our tunes of choice—mostly Christian music and country. The room didn’t inspire any HGTV spin-offs, but it got the job done.
