"It is all about the product, isn't it?" Jack says.
Carol sits back. "Yes and no. There isn't much in life that can exist independently and it seems that the most successful concepts, people, and businesses are interdependent-somehow connected so that a change in one area creates a change in the others. In the case of product, there's an interesting correlation between quality and employee loyalty, and you know from our past conversation how that translates into customer loyalty as well. Studies have shown that as the quality of the product rises, so does employee loyalty. Employees who are proud of the product they make, or the service they provide, enjoy coming to work. They anticipate the new day. And as we all know, when we are enthusiastic about what we are doing, we do better work. And better work creates higherquality results. So the cycle looks like this: high product quality generates high employee loyalty, which translates to high enthusiasm, which generates higher-quality work, which translates to higher product quality."
"More Management 101?" Jack says, smiling.
"Yup," Carol says, smiling back. "And here's the payoff. The message for business owners is: Be passionate about your quality, celebrate that quality in word and deed, and your people will be passionate about their work. For employees the message is: Be proud about your work and what you produce and you will make your work environment more enjoyable."
"Wow! All this from a simple cup of coffee. Who'da thunk it?" Jack says, tongue in cheek.
"Who, indeed?" Carol replies, draining the last bit of foam from her latte.
