Jacinda stared at the display in front of her. When the news about incoming JumpShips had reached her, she had been in the middle of exercising her leg. She had immediately showered, then gone straight to the command center. She had been too nervous to wait anywhere else.

The command center had not yet received word from the recharge stations about the identity of the new arrivals, but Jacinda had already ordered a general alert throughout all military facilities on the planet.

Who are you? she asked the just-arrived JumpShips.

Lightspeed lag from the jump points was roughly fifty minutes. Her hope was that it was the Wolves returning with news of a victory on Terra, but she was too much of a realist to bank on that.

Should be any second now…

She caught her bum leg shaking, so she pressed a fist into it to steady it. The shakes were new, but her new physicians assured her they were normal and a sign the healing process was almost over, something about the nerve endings firing at full capacity and her brain needing to catch up. She missed Samuel. He had been far more competent than her new doctors, who had not spent half their life working on the limb-regrowth technology.

At least he had saved every little bit of information about his research.

“Those are Wolf’s Dragoons JumpShips, sir,” the communications officer said without preamble.

Wolf’s Dragoons. One of the most fearsome, elite mercenary commands in the entire Inner Sphere had come here? Jacinda blinked in surprise.

“DropShips are detaching and accelerating toward the planet,” the commtech continued. “ETA seven days.”

“Get me a best guess on the forces in those ships,” Jacinda said, “and order an end to all sibko training exercises and Trials of Position. Send all the pack leaders here to the command center. Their pups will pack up their equipment and get it here as well.”

“Where will you be?”

“Getting us more equipment. And do not answer any message those mercenaries might send. Do not respond to any batchalls. Have I made myself clear?”

“Aff, Star Captain.”

“Good. And make sure anyone taking over after your shift knows these orders. If anyone responds to the mercenaries, it will be your responsibility.”

The commtech swallowed in discomfort. “Aff, Star Captain. Understood.”
