“Slow day, quiaff?” Star Admiral Martin Thastus said as he glanced around the bridge of the Aegis-class heavy cruiser Black Talon. The temporary dry-dock scaffolding obscured some of his view out the main viewport, but he wasn’t really looking. His attention was on the only other officer with him on the bridge, his XO, Star Captain Stanley. Only a skeleton crew was still aboard, just enough for emergency operations, should they be needed. The other crewmen present were repair technicians from the Star of Ironhold dry dock facility. It was not a full-blown repair port, but one used for maintenance operations exactly like those the Black Talon needed most right now.

“We should be with the primary task force or at least on patrol against the Wolves,” said Stanley.

Martin Thastus nodded. “I regret that we lost the bidding to participate in the assault, but we needed the time to rotate the crew planetside for recuperation and to get maintenance work on the weapons and engines.”

“I wish to be fighting in the Inner Sphere. There’s no glory to be won here,” Stanley said, gesturing around the bridge with one hand. “We deserve better than to sit out this fight.”

Thastus rubbed his jaw. “Have patience, Stanley. We’ll get our chance. In the meantime, let us go and tour the engine room. Scaring some of the technical crew with our presence will cheer you up.”
