It was late when I got home, but Cole was in the office. My grandfather had used it as more of a den, but when we inherited the place, Cole took it over. He used the large desk in there to take care of business both for the inn and the city council.
Except right now, his business seemed to be sleeping. I knocked on the doorframe, softly at first and then a bit louder. Finally, he jerked upright, looking confused.
He spotted me and shook his head as if to wipe his mind clear. âWhat time is it?â
âNearly midnight.â
âShit.â
You wouldnât have caught either of us saying that word when our grandparents were around. Swearing was the one thing they were very strict about.
I took a seat in the chair across from my cousin. Heâd offered to put a desk in here for me, too, but I didnât need it. The kitchen was my office.
âWhat were you working on besides sawing logs?â I asked.
âThe books.â
âWhy? Gideonâs going to be here tomorrow. Let him do it.â He was incredible with financial stuff.
Cole shook his head, and we launched into a very familiar argument. âI donât know why you wonât take his help.â
âI do,â my cousin protested.
âOnly when you have to. But you know Gran and Gramps considered him their grandson, too. He feels like a brother to meâjust like you do. So whatâs the deal?â
âBecause I shouldnât need help.â Cole was still grumpy from his ill-timed nap, but then again, he was always grumpy on this topic.
âI think you mean we. We are co-owners, you know.â
He grunted, which was all the response I was going to get to that. But then Cole surprised me. âI was also looking at online reservation systems you can add to a website.â
âAnything decent?â
âTheyâre all expensive as hell, but I can see why people might expect them.â
âGot to spend money to make money, I suppose.â
âThat only works if you have money in the first place.â The weariness on Coleâs face no longer had anything to do with sleep.
âWeâll get there. We just have to find our niche. Figure out what works for us and make it happen. And everyoneâs struggling right now. The diner is. Hell, the hardware store shut down.â My absentee dad had quit years back, but Iâd kept an eye on the place ever since he abandoned itâand me.
Because Cole looked so weary, I decided to table the never-ending discussion for another time. âHow were our guests this evening?â
He frowned as if he hadnât thought of it. âThey were fine.â
âDid Gideon come over?â
âYeah. We worked on the smokehouse.â Cole shook his head, thinking it over. âDinner was quiet but civil. We ate the leftovers from yesterday.â
That reminded me of something. âThanks for feeding the cats.â
âYouâre welcome,â Cole said automatically. Then his gaze sharpened. âWait, what?â
âThe barn cats. I left you a note asking you to put their food out.â
âI didnât see a note.â
Shit.
I got to my feet, feeling uneasy. If they werenât fed, some of them might be still out there by the barn waitingâand making them prime targets for the coyotes.
