Chapter 4: How to play Bass Guitar
Now that you know how to hold yourself and conduct yourself when it comes to playing bass guitar, now it’s time to learn how to play it. There are some basic steps to doing this, and in this chapter we’ll go over just what to do with each one.
The first thing you need to learn is how to pluck the bass. Use the index and middle fingers of your right hand to pluck it. That way you don’t have to move your arm around as much. You can pluck the strings, but also work on alternating your fingers and switching strings as well. These patterns are important because you might play some songs that have you alternating between each one.
The next thing to learn when you’re playing is to mute the strings. Muting a string stops the vibration so that one sound doesn’t clash with another. To do this, you push the string in between the bends of your finger and hold it there. You can also mute it by pressing down as well.
Now it’s time to integrate both of your hands into this. With your left hand, become as comfortable as possible. It might not feel good at first, but go with the position that feels the best. Then, with your left hand, place your index finger over the first fret and leave the other fingers over adjacent frets.
Now, you shall learn to play the first four notes, E A D and G. They’re at the same place as your fingers, so you play them accordingly. At the same time, you should learn to press each one hard enough so that the pitch sounds correct. So with your left hand you press and your right hand plays. Your left hand should be held in a firm positon.
Next is music theory. This might not be as fun, but you have to have it. Start doing research on the different things involving music. They have books, and most of them apply to all instruments. After that, learn how to play the E major scale on the guitar. It’s the easiest one, and you can combine notes with this as well. It’s simple to do, and after a bit you’ll get the hang of it.
After that, you can learn popular techniques such as the hammer-on. That is a technique where you have your pinky pressed on the left hand side while the middle finger plays. There is also vibrato playing that involves fancy finger work. To do vibrato playing, you hold onto a string and let the noise come out of it. It’s a unique way to play the bass guitar.
All of these ways are perfect for those who want to learn how to actually play bass guitar and get good at it.
