Chapter 14

Anna finally managed to fall asleep as the sun was coming up, but she was awoken just a couple of hours later by her alarm. She had set it for earlier than usual on Thursday morning so she could call the glass company that Joe had recommended as soon as they opened.

Joe’s name worked like a charm. The owner kindly agreed to send over a couple of guys at noon to properly board the window and to measure for the replacement glass. Unfortunately, they had to order the glass, so it would likely take a couple of days before the repair would be complete.

With that unpleasant task out of the way, Anna did her best to enjoy her morning coffee on her front porch. She brought out a folding chair, because she was getting tired of sitting on the steps.

Wanda was watering some potted herbs on her own porch, and the smell of mint and basil drifted over as Wanda pruned her plants. She glanced over at Anna, appearing as if she wanted to say something, but she hesitated. Apparently, her curiosity got the best of her. “I’m not usually one to pry, but I couldn’t sleep last night. Did I see a police car drop you off in the middle of the night?”

Oh, great. Not only was the reputation of Anna’s business going down the tubes, but her personal reputation was, as well. “Yeah, that was me. I think my career as a bank robber is over.” Anna tried to force a smile, but she felt like she wanted to throw up.

“Hey, cheer up,” Wanda said. “There are plenty of art galleries in Seagull Cove. You could always give art theft a try.”

Anna literally laughed out loud. It was the first time she ever heard Wanda make a joke.

“I’ll keep that in mind,” Anna said. “It’s always good to diversify your resume.”

When Anna finished her coffee, she took a shower and went into work early. She drove, as Charlie and Joe had suggested, so that she wouldn’t have to walk home in the dark later that night.

There were two crime scene technicians snapping photos in her shop when she arrived. They assured her they would be finished within a couple of hours. Since she couldn’t get inside until they completed their work, Anna decided to take a walk down by the beach. She couldn’t just sit around watching the police process her shop, and she couldn’t bear to see neighbors and passers-by feign concern when they were really only looking for gossip.

Anna walked along the sand until her head felt clearer. She hadn’t talked to her parents since Sunday, but she decided against calling them this morning. If she called, she would not only have to inform them of the break-in, but she’d feel obliged to tell them about the note that was left. She didn’t want to admit that she was investigating, and, despite Charlie’s admonition, she didn’t plan to stop.

Instead, she went to Cove Coffee to grab a breakfast sandwich and another coffee.
