Chapter Eighteen

Now it was Sydney’s turn in the spotlight. “First, thanks for checking out the boyfriend,” she told Micki and Kat. “It helped Trip and me evaluate his answers to our questions.”

“And?” Micki pushed.

“He could be a brilliant actor and have us all fooled, but our impression is that as much as he took advantage of Mrs. Wiley’s generosity, he genuinely liked her. Probably didn’t love her, because when push comes to shove, he was using her. But from what we’ve learned about her, she wasn’t blind to his act.”

“How do you rate him as killer material?” Kat asked.

“He seems to think she changed or was changing her will to bequeath him a nice nest egg to finance his singing career. If he knew for sure she took care of him, he could have decided to jump the gun and benefit now. If he discovered she didn’t follow through, he could have been angry enough to strike back, which wouldn’t be out of character for the murder, because it appears to have been committed in a fit of passion.”

“Two good reasons why he might have killed her,” Marianne said.

Syd inclined her head. “But he also could have deemed his chances better if his benefactor stayed alive. At least for the immediate future.”

“In other words, you can’t prove anything yet, but he’s still a suspect,” Micki said.

“Trip and I are hampered by our civilian status. We’re not professional investigators or law enforcement types, and we don’t want to be. But the picture would be so much clearer to us if we knew more about the woman’s financial status, including her will, as well as what the divorce decree was supposed to include and the current status of the divorce.”

“Can’t you get most of that from Cathy’s attorney?” Marianne asked.

“We asked for those very things. Plus the investigative team’s notes about the murder site and circumstances surrounding the murder. Your call came before he got back to us.”

“You should go home and share his response with Trip, whenever it comes,” Kat said. “I’m better now that I’ve talked to the three of you.”

“Trip said he’d call if he heard from Brewer. Besides, there’s more to share.”

“More?” Marianne replied. “You’ve been busy.”

“Mainly following up on what you all found, although we haven’t met with the husband yet. But we did get permission to visit the murder site today. We couldn’t touch anything, but we were allowed to take photos. Trip discovered a tiny piece of metal almost completely buried under the debris of the broken oil bottles. We think the state investigator missed it. I took several shots. Here, check it out for yourselves.” She pulled up the photos on her phone.

The other women took turns gazing at the photos showing the unknown object. “It appears to be a circle. The edge is smooth and curved,” Micki observed.

Kat switched the phone’s position. “Is it gold of some sort? Or gold-encrusted.”

“It looks like there’s engraving on the one side, which disappears under the shards of broken bottles,” Marianne said.
