Donating Produce to Food Banks

Backyard growers often have more vegetables than they know what to do with. Most local food banks accept produce donations; find them by googling “food bank” on the Internet. Be sure to package your donation in a sturdy box or double paper bag to prevent bruising, and donate only hardy foods that have a three- to five-day shelf life. If possible, donate items that don’t require refrigeration, since refrigerators fill up fast.

In California, the Department of Food and Agriculture restricts donations to the county in which the food was produced. It doesn’t allow fruit or vegetables with insect damage, including the small holes caused by caterpillars.

Paul Ash of the San Francisco Food Bank says about 65 percent of the food distributed is fresh produce. But donating food isn’t the only way to help; food banks also need volunteers to repackage and distribute the donations. Paul says the gratitude of the recipients is “palpable”; the donations make a powerful difference in their lives.
