Darnell Williams

373 BCE – Near Delphi, Hellas

Darnell stared into the flames of the campfire, the crackle of the wood holding his attention as Pelopidas' voice rose and fell in the background.

“My fellow Thebans, the Spartan menace threatens us all. While most of Hellas wishes to live in harmony with their fellow man, the Spartans seek to enslave us all through their oppressive rule. Why you ask? To enrich the Spartan Kingdom at everyone else’s expense. The Spartans will tell you that they are simply maintaining the Common Peace to which we all agreed. But whose peace do they really keep? Is it the peace of their Persian overlord in Babylon who pays Spartan kings, their ephorate, and their assembly, talent upon talent of gold and silver? But why? What advantage do the Persians seek by engorging Spartan coffers? I’ll tell you. It is to recruit the best fighting men in the world, the men of Hellas, to soldier in King Artaxerxes’ endless wars against the nations of this Earth who would throw off his yoke of tyranny.”

A grumble from the assembled men at the campfire circulated at the statement's truth. Darnell, shifting his focus from the fire, gazed up at Pelopidas. He had heard many speeches like this. The Theban leader’s oration was good if not exactly original.
