ZIP ’N’ SNAP

Your baby will soon be doing things for himself, and you can help him learn those self-help skills with a fun game of Zip ’n’ Snap. He’ll be surprised and delighted as each layer is removed.

Materials:

• Variety of clothes with different closures—buttons, zippers, snaps, Velcro, and ties

• Your body

• Infant seat

Learning Skills:

• Anticipation and surprise

• Cause and effect

• Fine motor development

• Self-help—dressing

What to Do:

1. Collect a number of clothing items with a variety of fasteners.

2. Put the clothing on in layers, one on top of the other.

3. Place your baby in his infant seat, and sit opposite him.

4. Show him your funny outfit, then begin to peel off the first layer. Let your baby help you with the fastener. Make a surprise face after each task is accomplished.

5. Repeat until all the layers are off.

Variation: Instead of dressing yourself, dress your baby, then removing the layers one by one. Or dress a large doll, so you can both work together to remove the layers.

Safety: Keep your baby from getting frustrated by helping him along the way.
