Chapter Three

Oh boy I’m lucky

Oh, say I’m lucky

This is my lucky day!

–Music by Ray Henderson

Words by B.G. DeSylva and Lew Brown (1926)

Things were rather dark for Johnny Sylvester on Monday morning, October 11, reported the New York World.73 The World Series had ended and Johnny could hear his school chums knock a baseball around the adjoining lot and another group passing a football. He was tired of being confined to bed and worried about how much schoolwork he would have to make up from his long absence.

That same day, St. Louis had a mammoth celebration for the triumphant Cardinals in the streets of St. Louis. Rogers Hornsby, however, parted with his team and traveled to Austin, Texas, for the belated funeral of his mother.

As the Cardinals were being fêted at a giant celebration of over one million people, Babe Ruth motored nineteen miles due west of New York City to Essex Fells, New Jersey, to visit one person: a recovering Johnny Sylvester.

Accompanying Ruth were his manager and a reporter named Elenore Kellogg from the New York Daily News. The manager undoubtedly was Christy Walsh, although none of the newspaper accounts would disclose that he was with Ruth for the visit. His presence would make sense, since Walsh had coordinated all the barnstorming games, one of which Ruth would play later that same day. According to Kellogg, the trip was arranged by the Daily News.74 Ruth was set to play in a barnstorming game in Bradley Beach, New Jersey, that day, but the visit to the boy he dedicated his World Series home runs to would come first. Instead of taking the train to Bradley Beach as planned, he went by roadster to Essex Fells.
