CHAPTER 8

Jason Singh

I went straight to Elle’s quarters. It wasn’t on the hope that Em would be there.

It was time to start asking questions.

It took a while for Elle to answer, and when she did come to the door, she looked more haunted than ever.

My eyebrows snapped so far down, it was a surprise I could still see. “Are you okay?” I stammered as I walked in and stared at her.

She didn’t answer.

“Hey, Elle, what’s going on?”

“Nothing.”

“You look terrible,” I countered.

“I’m fine,” she insisted as she walked away from me. She turned her back and pretended to be more interested in the view.

I wasn’t going to be put off that easily.

I marched up to her side and stared at her until she finally made eye contact.

“It’s nothing you can help me with,” she said softly.

“Elle, just tell me what’s wrong.”

“Nothing,” she defaulted to saying as she turned back to the window.

A shot of nerves and frustration collided together in my gut. I stiffened.

I’d been ignoring my sister for far too long.

That ended now.

“I’m not leaving until you tell me what’s going on,” I said.

She looked at me glumly. “Like I said, I’m just a little tired.”

“You said you were sick, Elle,” I corrected. “Just tell me.”

“Jason, I’m fine.”

“Fine? You really expect me to believe that? You barely come out of your quarters. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but we’re on a pretty important mission here.”

“You don’t have to give me a lecture for not pulling my weight,” she sighed heavily.

“And why not? Ma seems content to leave you in this room, but you’re still a part of the Coalition, and you should still be pulling your weight.”

She shot the view a bitter, sad smile. “Don’t you worry, brother,” she whispered, “I’ll be pulling my weight soon.”

“What the hell is that supposed to mean? What’s going on here?” I insisted, my voice echoing through the room.

“Just go, you have training in half an hour.”

“Yeah, I do, but… hold on, how do you know that?”

She didn’t answer. She locked her gaze on some distant star system, her eyes never blinking.

“Elle, for the love of god, I’m your brother, just tell me what’s going on with you.”

She didn’t answer. In fact, she appeared to focus intently on that speck of light in the distance. It took up so much of her attention that she got a distinct glassy look in her gaze.

“… Elle?”

“How are things going with Em?” she suddenly asked.

“Don’t change the subject. I’m not leaving until I know what’s going on here.”

“Then you’re going to have to wait three days,” she muttered.

I was starting to feel alarmed. It was snaking up my back and hitting my bloodstream. “What?”

“Jason, you should try hard on your date with Em tonight.”

“Excuse me?” I spluttered. “How do you know about that?”

“Em told me,” she replied quickly.

How? I’d gone straight to Elle’s quarters after my conversation with Em. Unless Em had dashed in and dashed out in the space of a few seconds, she hadn’t seen Em.
