Practice Opposite Emotions Meditation

As you sit or lie in meditation, notice an emotion that you are experiencing or that you want to explore. Invite that emotion in. Feel it in your body, noticing sensations. If images or thoughts come up, notice that, too.

Now ask yourself what an opposite emotion might be. There is no wrong answer, just something that makes sense to you. Invite that emotion in. If it’s hard to access, try recalling a time when you felt that emotion. Feel it in your body, or imagine feeling it in your body, noticing sensations. If images or thoughts come up, notice that, too.

Now invite back the first emotion, noticing if it feels different or the same. Then invite back the opposite emotion. Alternate back and forth between the two, noticing.

Maybe experiment with welcoming both emotions at the same time.

Then let this go and come back to your breath. Repeat again with any sets of emotions that you would like to explore.
