CHAPTER 16
"HOW DID YOU go with Angus?" Mum yelled from her bedroom. She was looking for a pair of earrings to go with my outfit. Seeing as though I had gotten all dolled up for my appointment with Pat the other day, it was difficult to know what to go with for an actual date. Mum had tried for the revealing dress again, but I wasn't in the mood at all for going out and really wanted to wear my jeans.
"Um, yeah, fine. I just dropped it off with Mrs Wakefield. I mean Jillian," I yelled back, running my hands through my hair hoping that dried sweat could pass for hairspray.
"So, did you apologise?" She bustled back in holding up two pairs of earrings.
"We don't even know if I have anything to apologise for," I bristled. "I left a bottle of wine. He'll know what it's for." I chose a green pair of studs. From the look on her face, I knew she was hoping I'd go with the silver droplets.
"Alright, alright, keep your knickers on." She flopped on my bed, surrendering to the fact that I was going with comfort over prostitution. "Jillian told me about Caroline's baby, by the way."
"Did she? She said she hadn't told you,â I said.
"I just got off the phone from her. She's panicking because her caterer called in sick for the garden fete. You know what she's like, it has to be perfect, or her life will be over."
"What will she do?" I brushed a bit of pressed powder over my nose.
"Oh, I'm sure she'll find someone. Worst comes to worst, she can buy some party pies from the shop, or something."
I smiled at the difference between Mum and Jillian. Mum looked at food as something you put in your stomach to fill it, then you moved on and didn't think about it again until your stomach started making grumbling noises. Whereas I knew Jillian would be horrified at the thought of shop-bought pies and pasties at her garden fete.
"Mum, she can't just have party pies and footy franks!"
Mum shrugged. "I don't know. Why don't you ring her and tell her you'll do it then? You've cooked in her kitchen loads of times."
"For Christmas drinks and dinner with just us. I've never cooked for two hundred-odd people before." I put my lipstick in my clutch purse and walked out to the kitchen, Mum following close on my heels.
"You cooked at the pub."
"Chicken schnitzels and garlic prawns, Mum. I think Mrs⦠Jillian, will be looking for something a bit more professional."
"What's wrong with chicken schnitzel and garlic prawns? That's fancy, isn't it?" Mum looked confused.
"Oi!" Dad shouted from the lounge, "It's starting!"
I heard a knock at the door, butterflies lifting their weary heads in my stomach. I smiled at Mum and gave her a kiss. "Wish me luck."
"Have fun, darling." She hugged me, then shuffled in her Ugg boots through to the lounge.
Even with the butterflies, the thought of spending the night cosied up
